has anyone applied for a work permit themselves or is it best to use a service

Agree, you can do it yourself.

The forms are not that complicated and the documents needed from the company are standard documents the company uses frequently for all sorts of business matters and contain nothing the company would want to keep highly confidential.

Can of course depend on the fee the agent wants.

Lawyers often charge outrageous fees which are simply a rip off for very little work usually performed by junior staff.

Agents vary considerably, some very reasonable.

Some accountants offer this service and some at very low fees.

May also depend on which office you apply..

Certain offices may be willing to assist you to complete your application yourself and offer some English Language guidance..

Other offices may insist you employ the services of the chief's brother's wife's aunty who has an accounting business..

I do know of people who do it themselves, namely at Chonburi..

Maybe if you have poor Thai skills, consider that some province's Labour departments will speak no english..
