Help! My wife’s trying to cause my death by overfeeding!

Don’t get me wrong. I know that ultimately I am responsible for what goes in my mouth. And I know it’s really not fair to blame someone else for this. Just put the fork and spoon down, and all that. I’ve heard it all before, and I know it’s true. But I really am starting to wonder if my wife might not be trying to kill me by overfeeding me.

Let’s just take a look at what happened at dinner tonight. First we have a larb moo with crispy pork rinds and cucumber slices alternating all around the platter. Then comes a deep fried tubtim fish in a garlic mushroom sauce. And finally a wun sen noodle dish with squid and dried shrimp. Not to mention a huge bowl of hom mali steamed rice. There’s enough food to feed an army, but it’s just the three of us (me, my wife and my daughter). And it’s like this morning, noon and night, day after day.

As if this wasn't enough, in between meals, I’m constantly being plied with snacks. If a grilled sausage vendor passes by the house, I can’t stop my wife from running out and buying forty or fifty baht worth of food. She gets a lot of pleasure from feeding me those little sausage balls, sometimes while I am busy on TVF. I have to admit a lot of bonding goes on between my wife and I during these feeding sessions, but that's getting a little sidetracked.

So the problem is that every time I try to tell my wife that I’m worried about my health, and worried that I’m getting fat, she seems crestfallen. On a couple of occasions I have actually seen tears well up in her eyes. I love my wife dearly, and I want her to be happy, but I’m worried if things don’t change, I’m not going to be around much longer.

Does anyone else have a problem like this, or have any ideas on what I should do? I really could use your help.

I came to Thailand 10 years ago and because of my wife's cooking (great!...but too much) I gained 20 kilos.

I'm built like a "trunk" so I don't notice much ( the weight gain was gradual and I still lie to myself) except my waist went from 36 to 42.

My wife is different though in that she is on me constantly to exercise and eat good foods ...she now cooks special food just for me ...vegetables and some chicken or pork without the sauces and spices...I think she wants to me "live long time" so as to take care of her and the family...Still, as an old man, its HARD to lose weight once its put on....Oh Well

Anyway ...I don't think your wife's trying to kill you...sounds like the typical Thai diet...

Its hard to loose the weight.. but not impossible if you want it.. only problem is you need to cook for yourself and eat healthy. I gained 25 kg on Thai food and alcohol in 2011. Took me a year to loose it and kept it off ever since.

The Thai diet is not as healthy as it looks.. loads of hidden sugars in dishes.

your wife obviously takes a lot of pleasure in giving to you and is hurt

that you dont appreciate her kindness. and you dont like to hurt her feelings

what about putting it across this way: that this amount of food makes

you feel unwell, heavy, tired, lazy and unhappy. might not sound very pretty

but she has to realize the true effects of her kindness

once is not enough--you might have to repeat the same message every day.

also mention how great you feel after a small meal. how light and happy

and content you feel

i reckon you got to be firm with her on this. she might not like it but

A lot of us have a similar problem..us farang "saddled" with these lovely Thai women, their culture at 180 degrees to ours, from A to Z

Thai women have what I call " straight ahead thinking" every single move they make is reactive to an immediate need

I have been teaching my wife to be more PROACTIVE..

Consider blood tests - cholesterol, blood sugar, etc. and blood pressure, then convince her your health is at-risk

wont work. hubby, the cook, insists that i also eat all ... and when i mention the word FAT, he poopoo's the idea ( i am normal weighted and small ) but he insists that at my age is should eat and enjoy (52 hahah)... and when i mention salt sugar or oil he says 'farang are always afraid to die'... food should taste good and should be eaten a lot, not in tiny portions.

give it up... i always put aside a plate or so of food for my best neighbhors or my kids (in army or not living at home so come through house, i have food for them), ive tgried showing him thai sites about cholesterol and salt... its still a NO GO.

i try to eat more healthily when he isnt around to cook; or i offer to cook (italian/mexican anything spicey) and he can add all the salt he wants...

try to cook for her or cook together and keep chanting: we are only the two of us,no need to cook for an army...
