Importing 2nd Hand Computer to Thailand

Recommended Posts

Posted

I have a 2nd hand Computer that I purchased about 3 years ago. I paid about $2500.00 for it. Not sure whats its worth now but alot less than I paid for it. If I want to send it by Fed Ex to Thailand what will I be charged???

Dumb question. You didn't mention from where or the size and weight. Why don't you ask Fed Ex? As a rule, shipping via freight expiditers such as Fed Ex, DHL, UPS, etc... are a bad idea. You usually get slapped with all kinds of extra fees. Better to ship via EMS or with the postal service in the country of origin. whistling.gif

BB1950. You think I would ask on Thaivisa.com about Fed Ex Courier costs. I would just go to there website or phone them. Let me REPHRASE the question is there any Import Charges in Thailand when importing 2nd hand PC Equipment which is for personal use???

Of course, I've seen all kinds of dumb questions asked on ThaiVisa.com.

Again it depents on how you ship it. There's 7% VAT and if you have it shipped via one of the couriers that I mentioned; Fed EX, DHL, UPS, etc... they'll often want some kind of import fee. However if you ship it via EMS or post office in the country of origin, packages often arrive with no VAT or import fees.

Shipping via FedEx, UPS, DHL etc, are probably the worst methods and are much much more likely to be slapped with customs charges than other methods (EMS), or simply putting it into your suitcase when you travel.

Obviously, the size and weight will play a big role in which method would be best.

Personally, I would not bother with any kind of desktop machine, just buy here. Laptops are easy, just take as carryon when you fly.

take the hard drive(s) out, put them in a external hard drive case and carry them on the plane with you.

put them in a camera case or with a laptop or ipad or anything like that so they look like accessories.

buy a new desk top in Thailand without hard drives. Cheap.

make sure you bring the product code for every piece of software you have.

sell your old hardware on ebay. that might pay for 25% of a new computer.

don't leave porn on your hard drive.

if you or if you or any member of your IM force are caught or killed, the Secretary will disavow all knowledge of your actions.

good luck Jim.
