Multi entry non o visa late to leave country after 90 days

A friend has a multi entry non o visa, but as failed to leave the country after the first 90 days and is now 9 days late.

Can he go to the nearest border?

Or is the visa now dead and now needs to get a new visa.

He can pay the overstay fine of 500 baht a day on departure from the country and re-enter to get another 90 day entry. His visa would not be cancelled.

Doing it at a border crossing has a higher risk of getting caught with the overstay due to check points on the way there than doing it by flying out.
