far from the madding crowd? but still close to the madness!

Featured Replies

any suggestions for a cheap, eco friendly accommodation where I can relax, nap, write, read, breathe! - away from the hustle and bustle of the busy streets? Yet close enough to satisfy my addiction for the madness that is Bankok - when I desire?

monkey dog - I assure you I am 100% genuine in my post - there is absolutely no ulterior motive!!! Its just like I posted! I have been to bangkok quite a few times but have always stayed close to the busy drags - sukhumvit for one! Now I am a search somewhere more off the beaten track - if that is possible in BKK!!

There are some cheap apartments in the sois off Udom Suk. Down the sois its quiet and peaceful, (as well as cheap), but can grab a mototaxi to the BTS whenever you hear the call of the wild.

Phra Kanong. Really Thai, great atmosphere, market and street food, and minutes from the hot spots by BTS.

And also some of the worst traffic in all of bangkok. At 2am sukhumvit road at phra kahnong bts areas is often still traffic jammed, crazy really.

So not really far from the hustle and bustle.

Never really noticed a problem at that time in all the years I've lived there.

Well that depends on what you consider to be Phrakhanong.

Are you talking about soi Pridi?

The heart and soul was ripped out of that area about 15/16 years ago with the AFC, or Tom Yam Gung as it is sometimes known.

Wasnt helped by the market being demolished to make way for yet more condos.

Try driving from somewhere like Jusco and waiting to turn right onto Suk Rd, can take almost one hour to drive from Klong Tan to Suk rd, the traffic is terrible.

If the truth be known is a dirty noisy congested part of the city, usually favoured by Cheap Charlie farangs living in places like SP mansion, the big red brick building on soi 32.

Have been au fait with the area for at least 20 years, the mrs is from soi 34, or soi Ananap as it is known in Thai.

OPs problem, he doesnt say what his budget is, or how long he is staying.

For the real deal he should head out to Phrapradaeng, or its ugly twin sister Phrasamutchedi, he will get the real Thai experience.

Once he goes "local" he will soon find out there is no need to head of to the farang enclave of lower Suk.

Another option is Ramkhamhaeng Rd out by the Uni and hospital.

I choosed in my case On Nut, Floor 25 is away from the bustle and within a few steps into a large local market/BTS.

But the mentioned Udomsuk is good, include there Soi 101/1 as well. Pretty quiet and green and with a few steps or a motorcycle taxi at the BTS station.

Bangkok is always traffic jammed, so most important point is to choose a location near to a BTS/MRT station. So you can avoid the traffic most times, not care which time is it.
