Police seek public advice on prospective reform

BANGKOK: -- Gathering public opinion on police force reform should be done in 30 days, deputy national police chief Pol General Chalermkiat Srivorakan said yesterday.

Chalermkiat said a meeting was held yesterday at the police head office to set a framework for the procedure of gathering opinions from the public, academics and those working with police.

The opinions of the relevant parties on what should be covered in police reform would then be analysed in depth. He said the police would complete the task within 30 days, before handing in a report to the police reform committee, which is chaired by the national police chief.

Here's a simple idea, stop letting errant officers off so easily and maybe get a little credibility back.

Fire all and start new by giving then ethics test first and heir them only they really really pass the test and they did not cheat the exam

Thai police surveying the public about police reform. Can you imagine this ludicrous process? There was a detailed report by the US FBI after a joint program years ago working with the Thai police to recommend reform. The findings of that report were that the Thai police are so culturally corrupt that no measures would be effective in reforming Thai police process. i think he may be too busy with the stock market etc to pay much attention to his ' day job '.

I am trying to look at this as a positive not negative , I can't believe an organization such as a police force doesn't know how to see and rectify it's short comings, possibly the easy way out is to hire experts say from Singapore and H.K. in keeping within the Asian block, mind they will find everything exasperating so that might not work all that well , not to place a fine line on the duty of the RTP but the force can only be described as very ordinary, there I go all negative again.

The headline reads "Prospective Reform".........meaning we'll listen, but take no notice........

You make the assumption that anyone would actually turn up and give "open, honest, constructive comments"!

I think not.

how about pay decent wages?

how about civil servant status(including medical health care and pension)?

how about an open transparent qualification test?

how about provide uniforms,fire arms and vehicles?

how about closely monitoring them and if they play not by the rules draconian penalty's enforced?

and so on...

What an utterly pathetic and disgraceful idea. The police in any country are there to enforce law - that is their job.

Why would any police regime in any country ask the public how to reform?

Laws are written to be enforced for the good of all, after hundreds of years of law development which offers equality and fair treatment of all.

The government should be reforming the police force, not the police force asking the public. This is ludicrous, beyond any measure.

Then again, most measures in T are ludicrous to begin with!

if they reform the police, no more pattaya, soi cowboy, nana. bars will have to close and serve alcohol during the proper hours. police ownership of bars dealing in prostitution will stop.

no more launching burning balloons on various holidays. or fireworks. how about drinking on the beach?

it will not be long before the police have real radios and computers, and are running your drivers license and license plate for arrest warrants. perhaps cross checked immigration and INTERPOL on the spot.

and enforcing traffic laws. everyone will need a valid drivers license. and be able to drive properly.

and that means all those expensive license plates from Bangkok that the police dare not stop will not be worth anything.

they will need to build huge traffic courts all over Thailand to handle the huge number of moving violations as people come to court for the first time instead of paying the Mafia police.

Decent wages and conditions would be a good start. If a police officer is making a wage on which he can keep his family then bribes would be unacceptable.

As long as police are paying for their positions corruption will never end. This creates a system of profit and turns the police force into a business not an entity that is designed to in any way protect the people or do the right thing.

Same same as down the chain of command. Some Police are known to give advice by the "stars". Huh? How about the Police do some real policing for a change! Enforce the law without fear or favour (or getting their snouts in the pigs trough)!

RTP it is best to keep ones mouth shut and be thought of as a fool than to open it and remove all Doubt. Nothing here folks move on.

What they forgot to mention was that all public representatives would subsequently be pulled over on the roads and tea money fined five hundred baht for participating.

Stop the corruption.

Instead of asking the public to give suggestions for reform, why not ask the members of the RTP themselves to give suggestions. But reponses must not be given to a police panel but a panel which would include Chiwit (sp) and some of the more honest members of Thai society. recruit about 15 members.

Then take the citizens suggestens, present to a limited number of policemen on a panel. 5 should be enough. then let the combined panels vote/adopt those suggestions deemed needed/required.

Stickyrice2000 you should know that NIDA is only reserved for special people, U keep this up and U might have to go in for re-programming.
