Thailand downgraded by US rights group

BANGKOK: -- Thailand again was placed by a US-based international rights watchdog, Freedom House, among the 51 countries and territories designated as "Not Free" on the condition of political rights and civil liberties.

It is the first time since 2007 that Thailand has been downgraded as “Not Free” when the country was under the administration of a military-appointed government that followed the 2006 coup.

Founded in October 1941, Freedom House is a U.S.-based non-governmental organization that conducts research and advocacy on democracy, political freedom, and human rights.

It evaluated state of freedom in 195 countries and 15 territories and determined that 61 countries became less free in 2014 while just 31 saw freedoms improve.

According to Freedom in the World 2015, Freedom House’s annual report on the condition of political rights and civil liberties, Thailand was ranked “Free” from 1999 to 2005, and “Partially Free” for the past eight years.

Of the 51 countries and territories designated as Not Free, 12 have been given the worst-possible rating of 7 for both political rights and civil liberties.

The Worst of the Worst countries are the Central African Republic, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, North Korea, Saudi Arabia, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan. The Worst of the Worst territories are Tibet and Western Sahara.

The US human rights watchdog placed Thailand “Not Free” status alongside neighbouring countries like Myanmar, Vietnam, and Cambodia.

The timing of Freedom House’s report coincided with renewed pressure from the United States government to lift martial law and end restrictions on freedom of speech.

Freedom House said Thailand’s political rights rating declined from 4 to 6, its civil liberties rating declined from 4 to 5, and its status declined from Partly Free to Not Free due to the May 2014 military coup.

It said Thailand suffered a coup d’état in which the military ousted an elected government, suspended the constitution, and implemented martial law restrictions that drastically rolled back political rights and civil liberties.

But in prompt reaction to Freedom House, the House Committee on Foreign Affairs disputed its reading of the situation in Thailand.

In a press conference today, its spokesperson Pilaipan Sombatsiri argued that Freedom House cannot rate Thailand as unfree or undemocratic “because the people are happy. They can live their lives normally.”

It depended on what Thai people thought, she said and added “Don’t let the outside world interfere with your thoughts too much.”
