I got a new passport and my 2 entry tourist visa still has one entry left on it in my old passport.

Am I correct in thinking I do not have to get it transfered to new passport and can simply use both passports at a border crossing to get exit stamp in new passport and then re enter again using both passports to show my still valid visa in old passport and getting the 2nd entry stamp in my new passport?

Can this be done at land border crossings for example Poipet or Savannakhet?

You have to use both passports on entry to use your visa. Immigration does not transfer visas.

When you leave the country you will show both both passport to show your current entry/permit to stay stamp in the old one and they will transfer that stamp to the new one and stamp you out of the country in it.

You need to go to immigration to have your stamps transferred before you leave the country.

They will do a stamp and put info about your visa in spaces on it and transfer the entry stamp from that visa and your current extension of stay stamp.

Will immigration issue an extension to stay beyond the expiration date of your current passport?

I remember reading a thread some time ago suggesting a new passport be obtained prior to applying for the extension to stay. Otherwise, you risk having the extension terminate along with the expiration date of your current passport. Thereafter, you would have to apply for a new (visa and / or extension to stay?) and run through the whole process again in order to use a new passport. Clarification on this would be greatly appreciated from those who have direct experience.

If you don't have a year or more left on your passports validity when you apply for the extension of stay the extension will only be valid to the date your passport expires, After you get a new passport they would transfer the shortened extension to your new passport. Then before the shortened extension ends you would have to apply for a new extension by submitting all the required documents and proof plus the 1900 baht fee.

Ubonjoe, thanks.

I've just now checked through expired passports and your comments are true to fact.

I would add as matter of interest:

When applying for another extension in the new passport (same paperwork and fee), the shortened and now transferred extension will only be extended to the date it would otherwise have been if the old passport had not expired within the validity of the original 1 year extension to stay application.

For example:

  • annual extension to stay application processed in March with passport expiring December same year
  • extension granted until expiration date of current passport
  • new passport obtained November and extension stamp transferred to new document
  • extension to stay application resubmitted in December; approved but only until March of following year (3 months)
  • March following year; submit application to stay (same paperwork and fee as usual); approved for full year

Strange but true.

Your old passport reflects how it was done before. You didn't submit all the documents and pay a fee for the remainder of your extension.though. The gave you the remainder of your extension after you got the new passport.

That is not how it is done now.

Probably the best option is to obtain a new passport just after extension expiry, which would put your passport expiry and extension expiry in sync.

Brits with up to 9 months remaining on their existing passports at renewal time will have this period automatically added to their new passports.
