Chiang Mai fights seasonal haze problem

CHIANG MAI, 12 February 2015 (NNT) - The northern province of Chiang Mai has called for a meeting with several related agencies to find ways to tackle the seasonal haze problem.

The meeting, held yesterday to discuss a plan to effectively prevent and reduce haze and forest fire problems, was chaired by Chana Paengpiboon, Chiang Mai deputy governor. Under the plan, which is to last 60 days, from February 15 to April 15, the province will closely monitor and control the cause of air pollution.

Participating agencies agreed in the meeting to strictly enforce ban the burning of waste, weeds and paddy stumps as well as forest during the 60-day period. Moreover, the province will soon launch a campaign to boost awareness of local residents and visitors on air pollution caused by smog.

Chiang Mai and other northern provinces have for years been facing problems of thick smog, caused by agricultural waste burning and forest fires, blanketing over the sky during the dry season. The problem has been worsening, affecting the tourism sector and locals' health.

Begin on 15/02 ... be ready for 2 days under a smoke blanket as everyone will rush to burn before 15 Feb ...TIT ;-)

Now let's see after if this will bring some consciousness .

Talk, 10 years later talk!

Sure. We all know the real problem is at the smallest level of government....headmen of Tambons, etc.

Many areas are not really owned outright....something akin to what we would call "Squatters"...who settle in at low prices and work the land, eventually forming small enclaves of "almost owners" on Government land. Protection is locally provided, through "contributions".

That is not going away.

Where can one find what the Chiang Mai Air Quality Index is?

In Beijing, which is much worse than Chiang Mai for the time-being, they have warning flags to advise when young children should not be outside, and another for older children.

As the smoky season is going to get much worse in the following weeks, we should all know the AQI is.

Year after year I hear the same claptrap from those people.

They still don't seem to be familiar with the following :

Action speaks louder than words...

Maybe it all gets lost in the loud noise they are so good at.

1. The time to talk is not in the days & weeks before the burning season. It should have been after the last burning season, giving all year to come up with a plan.

2. Is "haze" the current euphemism for that lung-clogging smoke they get each year? Haze is certainly a kinder, gently term for their horrific pollution.

The appalling air quality caused by the burn off has long term health implications. As a foreigner I would never live in such a high risk environment. Hong Kong and Beijing are the same, not unlike the famous London smogs of the 1950's that killed hundreds of thousands prematurely. Happy breathing everyone.

At least we do not have any dust storms like Dubai and running out of locations to put our poop. Watch the long knives lest they turn you into a eunuch. With all those veils how do you find a g/f? Good Luck old boy

Really is pathetic as they trot out the same old media releases year after year ,probably get another release shortly about people should wear helmets when riding motor bikes.

There are literally 1,000's of soldiers around camps in CM why don't they get off their backsides and put the fires out,They could I guess receive some training as to what smoke actually looks like

I wonder whether the army will burn the land around Huay Teung Tao again this year.

I would imagine that it will be worse this year as the military has a larger budget and can play with more newly "acquired" toys.... Let's buy some turbo flame-throwers!!! w00t.gif

YES! SMOG is quite the wrong term for those who use it. Smog is natural fog, mixed with smoke.

Here, it's pure smoke, mixed with the spewing diesel smoke of buses and song teaws.

What Is Smog?

The term smog was first coined during the 1950s when it was used to describe a mixture of smoke and fog experienced in London. Major cities along the west coast of America were also experiencing a different type of air pollution.

Smog occurs when emissions from industry, motor vehicles, incinerators, open burning and other sources accumulate under certain climatic conditions. There are two types of smog: summer (the type of smog first experienced in America) and winter (the one first noticed in London).

I think smog is a fitting term.

Just seen a wonderful picture of Doi Suthep taken from Nimman.

Well I would have, but it actually just looks something like this:

Looks much like the view out my windows right now. Being away for years see this travesty of disgusting CM pollution is the same as it ever was.

Suffered through this for 10 years previously, it's never going to change. Think when we permanently move back it will have to be to a cleaner area.

After being away it sort of puts it into its proper perspective, CM is nice but that isn't.
