my friend ( farange ) and his tgf have just finished building a small home in nong khai. we are going for a housewarming party.

what would be an appropriate gift... do people do that here?

Since you write about 'we are going' I assume u have a gf so ask her what is normal in Thai ways. If your friend in from the same country as you, do what you back home. Personally, I wouldnt know.

My brother, the cheeky <deleted> gave us a big gift wrapped pack of 36 rolls of toilet paper and a dunny brush. He even tied a ribbon around it.

Oddly enough we got the same, evidently we are related smile.png

We received everything from the above, through assorted clocks, to a very nice wall hanging of grazing elephants.

All was 'home' related.

Usually when I have attended house warming parties, Thai and farangs, I buy a decent wall clock, a good name such as Seiko always goes down well and are popular, something a house holder would be proud to display in the home.

They start from about 600 baht up to many prices.

Get a nice snack basket/hamper.

You buy your friend a clock maybe they like it, but if they don't they have to hang it up anyway, and then think about how they don't like it every time they look at it.

Everybody likes snack-baskets

Try to find a gift that has no dislike risk. Decorative things are out. Maybe something practical, toaster, juicer, toolbox etc.

Also a good bottle of wine or booze would be appropriate. Failing that try some nice potted plant or a great food basket.
