Cambodian border crossing to CANCEL a Visa?

Featured Replies

Hi,

I'm in the process of getting a work permit (currently a student) and have been told I need to cancel my current education visa.

The easiest way to do this - again, from what I've been told - is to simply leave Thailand without a re-entry permit and that will nullify my current student visa (which still has 3 months left).

I'm planning on doing this at the Aranyapratet / Poipet border, staying in Poipet for one night, then coming back to Thailand the next day.

However, something online said you can't RENEW a visa for 30 days at this crossing. I'm really just looking for the standard 30 days on arrival. Will I still be able to get it here?

I don't want them to be very confused with all the stamps in my passport saying I still have three months etc.

Anyone with experience on this?

Moved to the Thai visas forum.

You can make a border crossing to cancel your extension of stay not a visa. If you had a valid multiple entry visa it would not be cancelled.

You could just leave an re-enter the country without staying overnight.

You will only get a 15 day entry unless you are from a G7 country which would get a 30 day entry. You can extend your entry for 30 days at immigration if the entry you get is not long enough time to do the work permit application.

Thank you very much for the reply, UbonJoe. I see you make some great posts here.

Still a little confused though. I have a visa expiry date in May. I do not have any re-entry permits. My last entry was on a single entry.

I was told that as long as I don't get a re-entry permit before leaving then my "visa" will be cancelled. Is this not true?

I was told this by both my school and my visa agent separately.

I was more worried I couldn't use that border crossing to get a standard 30 day visa, now you've made me more worried ;)

Your permitted to stay will end on exit. You can then enter on whatever visa exempt entry time your passport allows. You do not have a valid visa if it was single entry and you used it for entry earlier this month.

You no longer have a valid visa you are on a permit to stay. A visa only allows you to enter the country. That permit to stay the visa allowed will end when you leave the country.

Thank you all for the replies.

Not really sure how I don't have a visa (I chose single entry on purpose every time I leave the country and plan to come back) but I guess it's not an issue as my questions have been answered.

Thank you both!

I have the sticker and a stamp. My stamp date is for the middle of May.

The stamp is your extension of stay and the permit to stay you got from it is what you will be canceling when you leave the country.

  • 4 months later...

I have a similar problem. I want my extension of stay to end when I exit the country. I want to re-enter on a 30 day visa. Problem is,,,,I do have a re-entry permit.

Can I re-enter and ask not to use the re-entry permit??

Like this: my EOS and permit expire on July 7th. I want to come in on a tourist V so I can extend that at CW Immigration to 90 days and then one year.

I can't extend my current EOS without canceling it first. That;s a big hassle.

What is your is extension of stay based upon (working, going to school and etc.)?

Immigration have every right at the border to use the re-entry permit and refuse to allow you an exempt entry. It would be best to cancel your extension and re-entry permit before leaving. Please explain why it is a problem to do it.

You cannot extend a visa exempt entry at immigration for 90 days. Or do you mean applying for a non immigrant visa based upon applying for some type of extension of stay. If so what is the extension going to be based upon.

CW told me yesterday that I need to cancel my current Non O before applying for a new one based on Retirement

My current Non O is Support Thai wife and teaching with a work permit. CW said I need to cancel and they will fine me for each day I did not work (3 day exemption) before canceling. Make sense? To be it means a big fine because I stoppped teaching 2 months ago. That's 60 day overstay by their estimate.

So. If I exit Thailand that will cancel my current Non O without me paying any fine.

I imagine to cancel my re-entry permit would be a first for a farang to do that.

So, the issue is...if I cross the border before the 7th of July and come back before the 7th, when my Non O and re-entry expire, will they stamp my passport with a re-enty stamp, or can I ask not to use the re-entry and come back on a tourist visa.. ( run on sentence)

The reason I want a tourist visa is so I can go to CW and apply for a new Non o based on retirement. No Thai wife. I have all of the paperwork needed to do this.

I know I can cross anytime and it will cancel my current extension..it's just that darn re-entry that worries me. I don't want to go to CW and have a problem.

What a headache!

You must not be on an extension of stay based upon marriage. If you were it would not be tied to your job as a teacher. I think you truly have an extension based upon teaching.

If your extension was canceled your re-entry permit would not be valid and they would stamp it as such.

If you leave and re-enter on or before the 7th they would give you the visa exempt entry since the re-entry permit would only give you a couple of days stay.

Another option you have is to go to an embassy or consulate and get a non-o visa instead of just a visa exempt entry and having to deal with converting to a non immigrant visa at immigration. It will take 2 trips 15 days apart to get the visa/entry stamps.

Ok Joe, I really appreciate your help. But, I worked as a teacher for 7 years. I have a Non O Thai wife visa. You can work and have a work permit as long as you don't have a Non O retirement visa. Allowed to support a Thai citizen working, not allowed if retired.

You had a non-o visa that allowed you to enter the country and get the permit to stay you have been extending.

As I said if you had an extension of stay based upon marriage it would not be tied to your job as a teacher. Did your wife go with you when you applied for the extension? Did you show proof of 400k baht in the bank for 2 months or proof of 40k baht income? Did you have to have photos of you and your wife in and around the house? Did you have a copy of your marriage certificate and a Kor Ror 2 attached.to the application?

I you did not have any of the above you have an extension of stay based upon working as teacher.

If you truly have an extension of stay based upon marriage immigration would not be telling you that you are on an overstay. You could also easily change the reason for your extension to retirement without leaving the country, Maybe immigration is wrong.
