After attacks, Europe fights call for mass migration of Jews
By LORI HINNANT

PARIS (AP) — Despite desecrated Jewish graves in France and a deadly attack at a synagogue in Denmark, European leaders on Monday rejected calls from Israel's leader for a mass migration of the continent's Jews to Israel, urging unity instead.

Hundreds of Jewish tombstones were found vandalized in eastern France on Sunday, hours after a Danish Jew guarding a synagogue in Copenhagen was shot to death. Frenchmen have been accused of three deadly attacks on Jewish sites since 2012: one at a school in the southern city of Toulouse, another at a museum in Brussels and finally one at a kosher market in Paris last month. Twelve people died in total.

"We know there are doubts, questions across the community," French President Francois Hollande said Monday. "I will not just let what was said in Israel pass, leading people to believe that Jews no longer have a place in Europe and in France in particular."

French Prime Minister Manuel Valls said Monday the government would defend French Jews against what he described as "Islamo-fascism."

"A Jew who leaves France is a piece of France that is gone," Valls told RTL radio.

Hollande was to visit the desecrated Jewish cemetery in the small town of Sarre-Union on Tuesday, his office said. Of the 400 tombs in the Sarre-Union cemetery, 250 had been vandalized.

Investigators were questioning five minors, 15- to 17-years-old, in connection with the vandalized cemetery, said Philippe Vannier, prosecutor of the eastern Bas-Rhin region. One of the five had turned himself in.

All were from the region and none had any criminal record, he said. They can be held for up to 48 hours before being either charged or released.

In 2014, more than 7,000 French Jews in a community estimated at around 500,000 left for Israel, more than double the number for 2013. And the Israeli Cabinet on Sunday approved a $46 million plan to encourage still more Jewish immigration from France, Belgium and Ukraine.

The exodus from France accelerated after the March 2012 attacks by Mohammed Merah, who stormed a Jewish school in Toulouse, killing three children and a rabbi.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Sunday that at a time of rising anti-Semitism in Europe, Israel is the only place where Jews can truly feel safe.

"This wave of attacks is expected to continue," Netanyahu told his Cabinet. "Jews deserve security in every country, but we say to our Jewish brothers and sisters, Israel is your home."

Netanyahu's comments triggered an angry response from Copenhagen's chief rabbi, Jair Melchior, who said he was "disappointed" by them.

France's top security official noted that thousands of police and security forces are now protecting Jewish sites in France after the Paris terror attacks in January, and indicated Netanyahu could be taking advantage of the issue amid a tight election campaign.

"But, election in Israel aside, there is also a reality in France, which is the will of this government to ensure the protection of the Jewish community," Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve told The Associated Press.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel said Monday that her government will do everything possible to make sure Jewish sites are secure.

"We are glad and thankful that there is Jewish life in Germany again," Merkel said in Berlin. "And we would like to continue living well together with the Jews who are in Germany today."

Election year for Netanyahu....The only reason. By the way, he was widely criticized in Israel as well.

Why is it an election ploy? That implies that Israeli citizenry (the voters) are attracted to the idea of more immigrants.

With the housing crisis in Israel as it is, any Israeli with ambitions of owning their own home will hate the idea of more pressure on the housing market...supply and demand, prices will continue to rise prohibitively.

The call for more immigrants is more to do with future settlement building. "We have no room, we must expand further".

Settlement construction more than doubled in 2013; http://www.timesofisrael.com/settlement-construction-more-than-doubled-in-2013/

You might be right, i'm running with a half wind here. It was what the danish top rabbi, was quoted in the media, he was not happy about it at all - he is by they way related to a Danish jew, who is part of Netanyahu's government.

Yes that sounds about right not forgetting that Israel is a lot closer to Ethiopia than France. But thats not to say that Israel is happy with the situation. When I was last there two years ago all blacks that i came across seemed to be treated as second class and much cocern that the Israelie culture was being threatened by the influx

It's a wonderful election assistance for Mr. Netanyahu. Both Israelis and Jews worldwide should note that Israel may be safe for the time being, but it is turning into a racialist Apartheid state and if the present right wing coalition wins the forthcoming elections, they will lead Israel to an utter catastrophe, to its doom. On the other hand most Jews worldwide do feel part of the country where they live. US Jews consider themselves as Americans of Jewish religion, just as the US Italians consider themselves as US Catholics with some historical ties to Italy. The same refers to most European countries as well as the the "modern" immigration countries, like Canada, Australia and New Zealand and some Latin American countries. Does Mr. Nethanyahu really believes that international statesmen/women of Jewish religion or background, should leave their countries and emigrate to Israel? According to Mr. Netranyahu , who maintains that he speaks for ALL the Jews worldwide, he is also speaking for the US ambassador to Israel, who is a Jew, against the administration the Ambassador represents. How ridiculous!!!!!!

Not my intention to insult anyone. Its very difficult to separate fact from fiction - specially when much of the media in the uk is controlled or else owned by people with a vested interest.

Oh sure, 1 Cambodian-American is murdered by a hispanic american, so the millions of indo-chinese americans should move back to vietnam, cambodia,laos,and thailand because america is no longer 'safe' .. because of 1 or 3 murders in the last 3 months

i'm sure european jews will feel much safer in the middleast, where no-one is ever killed in ethic conflicts.

One could almost come to believe that Israel is actually trying to do the same as Hitler did and remove the Jewish population from Europe, .

History does it seems repeat its actions.

Browsing through the above posts including the OP, I must sadly comment that

1) True, some Jews moved to Israel because they love the idea of Israel being a Jewish State;

2) True, some of the Jews moved to Israel because they are in favor of Zionism;

3) True, some of the Jews moved to Israel, because it is with all its problems a Free Democratic State for Jews;

4) True, Jews moving to Israel are taking a great part (I would say the best part) of their host country with them (if you need an example - look at USSR) AND I DO NOT MEAN ONLY MONEY!;

5) True, the Jews leaving Europe will leave not only more room for Muslims but also more freedom for Muslims to do what they do;

6) True, more Jews coming to Israel will inevitably lead to more building, more development and generally a stronger Israel;

7) True, looking back at history the mass Jewish exit from Europe spells coming troubles for Europe;

I wish all involved parties - Jews, Muslims and Europe as much success as they can manage.

After all is done and said - each group deserves what they are getting. Good luck to them all. coffee1.gif

siampolee,

you are right, history teaches us nothing... and we tend to repeat the same mistakes.

On the other hand comparing Israel with Hitler gives away your sympathies.

Hitler was exterminating Jews. Israel is trying to pull them out of coming extermination. To you it is 'same-same'.

I wouldn't be surprised to hear from you that Israel commits genocide on Gaza Arabs by feeding the bastards to obesity.

If I misread your post, accept my apology. But my instincts never let me down.

Unfortunately discrimination exist in ALL religion and ethnic types, even between different Jewish communities, differentiated by world regions and culture. That discrimination started well before Christ. Discrimination exist in EVERY country, in some more evident than others. Jews may emigrate to Israel for different reasons, but not for safety. In the next WW, Israel will be involved, and in the center of the actions, and will be the first country to suffer the consequences. Some Jews will move because Israel will give them some advantages that many residents do not have, like housing and work, and status and benefits of "refugees", and using them to occupy more territory, but leaving them in a most dangerous location than in Europe.

It would be very stupid and very short-sighted for Jews to move to Israel. Does anyone believe that the Muslims will allow Jews to continue to have their Israel in Palestine, after all the atrocities they have commited against the Palestinians? Sooner or later they will be strong enough to expell or annihalate them and it would be a second holocaust, probably much worse than the first. Just look at what is happening to the opponents of ISIL who are very likely to be the future masters of the Middle East, who have already made clear that their ultimate goal is the liberation of Palestine.

Jews are a very tiny global minority. The vast majority are in Israel and the USA. It makes sense now for European Jews to consider migration now either to Israel, the USA, or Canada ... If later American Jews feel as unsafe as Europeans then the issue of most Jews being vulnerably in one place becomes more relevant. We aren't there yet and hopefully never will be.

Immigration to Israel is happily open to Jews. To other countries which may be safer the immigration is much more selective so no not all who wish to leave can go to the USA.

Per capita a far higher proportion of Jews emigrated to Australia after the war.

That's hardly relevant to today as the percentage of global Jews there is quite small. Australia also has selective immigration. Jews go to Israel for different reasons hopefully more positive attraction to Israel and sometimes in flight mode as from Ukraine.

Ideally all the reasons would be positive but that's not the real world either today or historically.

Anyway both USA and Israel have about 6 million Jews each. Australia has about 100 thousand and France the third largest population of Jews has about 500 thousand.

Some background on the push and pull factors of Jews making aliyah to Israel:

http://forward.com/articles/206328/anti-semitism-drives--jump-in-aliyah/

To put that in perspective, about 1 percent of French Jews and a whopping 6 percent of Ukrainian Jews immigrated to Israel this year — but only 0.06 percent of U.S. Jews made the move.

This is no shock. Israel’s Jewish population has subsisted on aliyah since the country’s birth, but most of those immigrants have been motivated by what are called “push factors,” or conditions that drive them out of their home countries. And even though Israel’s economy and infrastructure have improved in recent decades, “pull factors,” or conditions in Israel that attract immigrants, still aren’t as strong.

Sure in the wake of Paris and Copenhagen, some more will come from Europe now ... but it's doubtful the numbers will be anything very dramatic as in the past, that is, unless the situation becomes much worse.

I realize many will discount this video as propaganda as it shows a visible Jew deliberately walking though a Paris area with visible Muslims, but even so, it does illustrate some of the issues that VISIBLE Jews do experience in Europe. This is much less of an issue for assimilated Jews. So visible Jews are likely to consider going to Israel more seriously:
