Are you talking about a single-entry re-entry permit?

Yes a single entry. Am now in Laos, and have decided to travel down to

Cambodia. Can I get a re-entry permit at the Nong Khai border crossing

or at immigration in Udon Thanni ? Information I googled usually

says to get the permit where you live.

If you are already in Laos and did not get a re-entry permit before you left Thailand, you will either have to get a new visa at the Thai Embassy/Consulate in Laos or Cambodia, or enter Thailand on a visa exempt entry or VOA depending on your nationality. Both are issued at the border crossing, but only some do VOAs. A visa exempt entry will give you 30 days permission to stay if a citizen of a G7 country. Others and VOAs only get 15 days.

A re-entry permit serves to keep your current permission to stay alive. It must be obtained from your local immigration office before you leave Thailand. The two Bangkok airports also have an immigration desk where you can get a re-entry permit before departure.

Without a valid visa or a valid re-entry permit on your return to Thailand you will get, depending on your nationality,

  1. permission to stay for 30 days, or
  2. permission to stay for 15 days, or
  3. denial of entry

I have a one year retirement visa. I got a single entry permit and left for Laos. Now I wish to travel through Thailand and cross over to Cambodia. Can I get a re entry permit at Ning Khai immigration ?

There is a re-entry permit desk at the bridge in Nong Khai. They may do it for you there.

Thank you so much. That makes sense, but I could not find that information.

It is often said on TV that you are the wizard of visas. Now I believe it ! :-)

It also helps if you pose your question so that people can understand what you are asking. The replies from Maestro and Wayned were perfectly reasonable responses to your original post.
