Chinese Consulate General in Chiang Mai raises understanding of Thai culture for Chinese tourists

CHIANG MAI, 19 February 2015 (NNT) - The Consulate General of the People’s Republic of China in Chiang Mai is putting effort into establishing an understanding among Chinese tourists of Thai culture, laws and language, to keep problems caused by culture shock to a minimum, the Consul General Mr. Chao Xiaoliang has disclosed.

The effort was made as a hundred thousand Chinese tourists descend on Chiang Mai to celebrate Chinese New Year. Most of them exhibit appropriate behavior. They respect Thai culture and laws. Only a small number misbehave as they don't understand Thai language and customs, he said.

The Consul General explained that residents of Chiang Mai may encounter difficulties caused by Chinese tourists, due to the cultural differences. However, these tourists are bringing prosperity to the economy of the province and the whole country.

Therefore, the Consulate-General has tried to overcome the problems by cooperating with provincial authorities to raise the level of Chinese familiarity with Thai customs. More guides who speak Chinese are employed and signposts written in Chinese have been installed around the city. Travel guidelines for Chinese are available on the Consulate General’s website. This is expected to encourage Chinese to behave properly while they are in Thailand.

They don't have to "...understand Thai language and customs...", all they have to do is practice common courtesy and civility.

Just like we all should.

That precisely is the point. "Common courtesy and civility" means enormously different things in different countries. In my country everyone walks into houses with their muddy shoes on. unsure.png.pagespeed.ce.E7Vo3qsmeCQhPTdy

'Common' courtesy? Common to whom? Lest we forget that the Han culture, China, has been around for 5000 years, which gives the chinese a leg up on everyone else regarding how to behave. And, unfortunately, they can be rather arrogant about it all and will remind the rest of us of their 5000 years of 'doing it correctly'.

Because they've been doing something for 5000 years does not mean they're doing it correctly, take a dump on the floor for 5000 years doesn't make it right. Malta has the 7000 year old temples, it truly is an ancient civilisation which is truly civilised by today's standards!

....To better appreciate Chinese culture undefiled by the Cultural Revolution, , go to Taiwan. There you will experience genuine good manners and a much higher standard of business ethics.

Or save some money and spend a weekend up in Mae Salong which is a Chinese town with good food and good views and, I should mention, lots of Chinese tourists admiring aspects of Chinese culture now lost to them.

Pooping and peeing in the parks is "doing it correctly"? Stealing the silverware is "doing it correctly"?

There is a picture that was circulating in Chiang mai of a Chinese woman taking a dump in the most.

90 feet up, there was a Thai tuk tuk driver taking a bath, same most.

A few tourists leave an uncleaned toilet in a tourists temple and its a national crisis,

Sounds like a long term TV poster is behind all of it

I really feel pity for the Millions of fellow ethnic Chinese tourists from Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia a.s.o. who are civilized folks with good manners, but now they are being lumped together with the uncivilized animals that decend from the mainland.

Particularly the Hongkongers are incredibly annoyed themselves being confronted with giant loads of Mainlanders who have do not make the smallest effort to behave like a civilized human being
