BMA warns vendors: Move or face charges
THE NATION

BANGKOK: -- CITY HALL yesterday threatened to take Khlong Thom street vendors to court if they set up their night market this Saturday.

Pol Maj-General Wichai Sangprapai, an adviser to the governor of Bangkok, said no force would be used against vendors who refuse to move to other locations, including those provided by the city, but those violating the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) order will be charged under the law.

The flea market, famous for decades for its odd vintage goods, will be closed down after the area is cleared.

The BMA argued that it had received many complaints that the market, which occupied the footpaths and spilled out onto nine streets in the area, was interfering with road traffic and access to Central Hospital.

Wichai denied rumours that the BMA had sent people to harass the owners of some stalls. More than 200 vendors gathered in front of City Hall to demand an apology from Governor Sukhumbhand Paribatra.

They said they have been wrongly accused of trying to resist eviction from the flea market due to the money generated from the lucrative but illegal rental business.

Wichai alleged that the rent that the vendors had to pay for a spot on the footpath amounted to about Bt20 million per month and those opposing the order are involved with this illegal income-generating activity.

one of my favorite places to buy worthless junk !

And Central Hospital is on the far edge so I do not see how they could get in the way of that,

BKK will never be the same smile.png

Hate to see it go....

agree, but they do cause quite a bit of traffic at night as cars park on both sides of the road. I think police could have reroute traffic as incoming cars into the city are very minimal during night time.

This is absolutely the government of FAOS (First And Only Steps In the Right Direction).

More selective enforcement paraded as reforms and fighting corruption. Only some billboards were shut down outside police stations, the money undoubtedly going into the right hands, of course, only some gambling dens shut down, only some political gatherings arrested, only some corrupt officials being prosecuted, only some former politicians dereliction of duty being prosecuted, with, of course, no reform to Education corruption, lottery ticket corruption, and illegal alcohol sales.

Here comes the new boss, same as the old boss, but same-same is somehow different this time....after all, all the polls say so....
