BERLIN (AP) — People who use personal audio players should consider limiting their use to one hour a day and turn down the volume to prevent permanent hearing loss, the World Health Organization said Friday.

The U.N. agency said young people are particularly at risk. with data from middle- and high-income countries showing that almost half of all 12- to 35-year-olds listen to their personal audio devices or cellphones at unsafe volumes. About 40 percent of young people are also exposed to damaging sound levels at nightclubs, bars and sporting events.

It's good to see them tackling the big issues like global warming and malnutrition. I've been a serious headphone user for over 10 years, spent thousands upon thousands of dollars on hi-fi gear and yet I dont have tinnitus - go figure. I agree that bars and clubs - particularly in Thailand - are ridiculously loud but most of us can limit our time in those venues. If this is aimed at kiddies with a pair of iBuds jammed into their ears and the volume dialled up to '11' on their phone or portable player, you cant really legislate against stupidity. Marcus at Headfonic in Perth has been in the business for many years and continues to be amazed by the volume levels many people will use when auditioning headphones and headphone amps.

As someone who is experiencing hearing loss from loud noise, I applaud this effort. At the time of the exposure, little was known about the long term effects. Once your hearing is gone, it's gone. If you like the full-range of music and notes, then please take care of your hearing. I remember several songs that I enjoyed and there were these delicate little instrumental sounds in the background, like a small ting from a triangle. I still listen to the songs, but those sounds are now gone.

Could you make the font bigger, I can't quite see it.....
