HUA HIN:- The Mayor of Hua Hin, along with the Boh Fai Bicycle Club and a former Hua Hin paratrooper have established the Hua Hin Bicycle Club to promote good health and exercise. The Mayor of Hua Hin Mr. Nopporn Wutthikul told Hua Hin Today that the new bicycle club he has founded with a member of the Boh Fai Bicycle Club Mr. Siwanat Watthanakhum and the former paratrooper, Pol. Lt. Col. Pramote Maneechai, now has 200 members. Activities includes a weekly 30 kilometre cycling run every Sunday at 7 a.m., starting at the Hua Hin clock tower to various destinations: Khao Takiab or Khao Tao or Wat Huay Mongkhol Buddhist Temple or Boh Fai Community or Hua Hin Airport.

“As the Mayor of Hua Hin, I am pleased about the a new bicycle club and would like everyone who is over 30 years old to bike because it is a good exercise and an effective way to maintain health. Moreover, biking is environmentally friendly because it is energy saving and helps solve pollution problems. In China and many countries in Europe, people are encouraged to ride a bike. The bicycle club will also allow more local people in Hua Hin to use bicycles in the future,” said Mr. Nopporn.
The Hua Hin mayor also added that he was thinking about some more activities in conjunction with the Club. He will discuss this with restaurant owners in Hua Hin and ask them to give 10% discount to the bicycle club’s members who have a meal there. Doing so will encourage locals and tourists to bike more. Membership of the Hua Hin Bicycle Club is not limited to Thais, any foreigners who would like to become a Club’s members can complete registration at the Boh Fai Bicycle Club, the Naresuan Military Camp’s Historical Centre or the Hua Hin Municipality.

A cycling club in Hua Hin is an excellent idea.

But I am wondering if Hua Hin should begin first by enforcing traffic laws on existing motorist and motorcyclist.

Here's my suggestion:

1. I see a lot of motorcyclist being pulled over and cited for lack of proper papers....but I never see any police stopping people for

a. speeding

b. making illegal U turns

c. riding motorcycles on the sidwalks

d. running red lights ....even when pedestrians are trying to cross the street.

I would rather have a driver without papers driving safely ....than a driver with papers running red lights.

Once the streets are safe...then bicyclist could feel safe sharing the same street as cars and motorcycles.

2. Make it illegal to park cars on the main road during busy hours.

Cyclist have go around around parked cars often moving into a lane of traffic going at very fast speeds.

3. Make a designated bicycle lane on paved streets.... like in most other countries.

4. require the city to construct bicycle lanes on sois and minor roads of new developments. Soi roads are so narrow only two cars can pass simultaneously...leaving no room for walkers and bicyclists. Most people in Thailand DO NOT own cars but there is no where to walk or bicycle

Sunday at 7:00 AM HH clock tower area is a ghost town.

Return trip might be a lot of traffic returning from Khao Takiab. And going to Khao Tao means going on highway 4, the "highway of death".

I travel highway 4 on my motorcycle from Khao Takiab to Khao Tao all the time. Unbelievably dangerous.

what would be cool is if some baht bus type trucks were rigged to carry bicycles. Then you could travel with a large group to a better location to ride.

There is a nice bike path on the "new" highway heading south out of Pranburi. I believe it is highway 4020.
