from BKK? with advanced booking?

Koh Samet 1st choice

Hua Hin 2nd choice

If flying is in the budget move Phuket to 2nd choice.

4th op Samui

Samui wouldn't even be in my top ten. ######ing shit hole. IMHO

Been there once. Never again. 2 days was enough.

I almost agree ... but would have to limit that to Chewang!

and from BKK Koh Chang is just too far for driving on a 3 day weekend

strangely I did really ENJOY Koh Si Chang for a 2 night escape! (accessed by passenger ferry from Sri Racha) but it is not really a beach destination!

Just as well many thais don"t agree with you or Koh Chang would loose a massive amount of business!

Again Bambino, you have forgotten Kanchanaburi, "The Land of Peace and Love'.

It doesn't only have peace and love in spades but it also boasts a waterfall, a bridge, a cemetary and some of the finest scenery in the country. The mountains are special and the rivers are clean and refreshing.

Come, enjoy, see, go back and tell your friends.

My vote is Krabi - I have travelled all over Thailand and Krabi was my last trip and throughly enjoyed it. The beach is stunning, it's cheap and there are many things to keep you busy for a long weekend. You can get a good deal with Air Asia.

My 2nd option would be Hua Hin - A different buzz/feel to many other spots in Thailand.

any resorts in particular you would recommend?

btw would you all advise booking online (some of the pics online are too gorgeous to be true!?) / direct with resort / skip the whole bloody mess and go through an agent?

I surely agree on Krabi., for a vacation and maybe soon to live, since samui is becoming cemented parking lot.

Only time I recall seeing the sea when in Kanchanaburi , it was off the coast of Burma.

I would go to Koh Chang. If I can ride a Honda Wave 125 from Pattaya to Koh Chang in 6 hours then I am sure you can get there in 4 hours by car from BKK. Have a look at the topic I got running on it, HERE.
