Prayuth reiterates commitment to fight corruption

BANGKOK: -- Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha on Friday reiterated his commitment that he would fight corruption in Thailand and prevent politicians from taking advantage of the bureaucratic system.

He was speaking at the opening ceremony of the seminar on Construction Sector Transparency Initiative or CoST held under the cooperation of the State Enterprise Policy Office, the Anti-Corruption Organization of Thailand and the British Embassy in Thailand.

Prayut emphasized that since the beginning of his administration, all the anti-corruption units namely the Anti-Money Laudering Office, the Public Sector Anti-Corruption Commission and the Auditor General of Thailand, have been working in cooperation with five committees the government has set up, international organizations and CoST in pushing for concrete results of the anti-corruption policy.

Despite that manifestation by the government, Prayut said that he had not yet satisfied with the progress of the policy. Thus he vowed to strengthen it and will raise public confidence in national transparency by using the Integrity Pacts in big projects. The development of public access to projects' information and plans of the government is needed.

Mark Kent, the British Ambassador to Thailand, said that corruption usually occurs in the bureaucratic system with high complexity.

However, online or directly accessible information on the government's projects can raise public confidence. Meanwhile press and journalists are responsible for exposing information to the public on a wider scale.

PM vows to prevent politicians from abusing the bureaucratic system

BANGKOK, 6 March 2015 (NNT) - Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha reiterated his commitment to fight corruption in Thailand and prevent politicians from taking advantage of the bureaucratic system.

His commitment was made while he was giving a speech at the opening ceremony of the seminar on Construction Sector Transparency Initiative or CoST held in Bangkok on Friday under the cooperation of the State Enterprise Policy Office (SEPO), the Anti-Corruption Organization of Thailand and the British Embassy in Thailand.

The PM emphasized that since the beginning of his administration, all the anti-corruption units namely the Anti-Money Laudering Office (AMLO), the Office of the Public Sector Anti-Corruption Commission (PACC), and the Office of the Auditor General of Thailand, have been working in cooperation with five committees the government has set up, international organizations and CoST in pushing for concrete results of the anti-corruption policy.

Despite that manisfestation by the government, Gen. Prayut said that he had not yet satisfied with the progress of the policy. Thus he vowed to strengthen it and will raise public confidence in national transparency by using the Integrity Pacts in big projects. The development of public access to projects’ information and plans of the government is needed.

Mr. Mark Kent, the British Ambassador to Thailand, said that corruption usually occurs in the bureaucratic system with high complexity. However, online or directly accessible information on the government’s projects can raise public confidence. Meanwhile press and journalists are responsible for exposing information to the public on a wider scale.

The corruption must be solved without bias and political interference, the ambassador remarked, saying that the British government was pleased to help Thailand in this regard and glad that the second phase of Suvarnbhumi Airport construction has embedded CoST in its operation plan.

So what is the Generals definition of corruption? Nepotism isn't included; the General is allowed to ride a bike without a helmet? Statements are allowed to be made about capital cases before the courts sit as to the guilt of the accused? What happened to the Ferrari Kid and his court case? What about the two tier cast system in Thai society?

Corruption begins when the eye turned is blind to what is happening. It’s the little things that turn ugly or are covered up by way of graft or just not following thru.

What needs to be put on the table is the meaning of corruption in Thai Society.

Bill Clinton said it so eloquently, "I did not have sexual relations with that girl". But he got the head job?

I will believe it when I see it. He has had almost a year already...........

And if you are going to tell me how he cleaned up a beach or a footpath has been cleared.......please, for the love of god, save it.

He stopped all those nasty orgies and happy endings. He will go down in history as the man who banned hand jobs.

Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha on Friday reiterated his commitment that he would fight corruption in Thailand and prevent politicians from taking advantage of the bureaucratic system.

This is a very narrow view and ultimately why corruption will not be reduced on Prayut's watch.

I think the big question is will he fight corruption and also prevent bureaucrats, police, the judiciary, and, the military from taking advantage of the bureaucratic system? Politicians benefit from corruption because they sit on top of this corrupt system. Just targeting the politicians will have very little impact on overall corruption, but will just ensure that the "good" and "right" people now receive the benefit.

Only his corrupt enemies will be chased after, his corrupt allies all still walk scott free.

This man is a huge hypocrite and I can't believe there are some naive idiots on here that think he is some kind of savior.

Assuming you are correct, if some corrupt people are jailed, isn't that better than none? At the very least, they can't be re-elected, unless PTP gives them an amnesty.

Why aren't the super rich military people being investigated, why doesn't the PM have to declare and account for his amassed fortune? If you are going to fight corruption seriously then start at the top and the office of PM is up there. I am all for rounding up the corrupt but don't make some immune from investigation.

so an admiral giving his wife 3 salaries isnt corruption then, or a politician taking advantage of the bureaucratic systems.

guess someone should clarify what constitutes 'corruption' in this whacky place.

Corruption is where the unconnected or your political opposites get advantage, everything else is just business.

Well, like others, I had hoped the PM would use a big broom to sweep away the people who are doing bad deeds. But I think at the bottom end of the broom handle the PM is using is the end of the handle....and nothing else. sad.png

Simple really.

Corruption in Thailand is the skimming of public money, usually in vast quamtities by people other than yourself. Once there is an overthrow of the system either by peaceful means or an army coup and the leaders then enjoy similar practices it is no longer perceived as corruption. In fact it is the expectation of enjoying such practices that generally has been the fundamental reason for such actions

So you see in simple terms ; It is only corruption when you don't enjoy those benefits yourself. When you do it is no longer corruption.

OK, then just close your eyes, spin around and point in any direction. The nearest government official in the direction your finger is pointing would be a great place to start.

How about looking closely at land offices.

What the Admiral has done is not illegal, therefore not corrupt - maybe unethical, although each of the members will be qualified for the job.

As to politicians taking advantage of bureaucratic systems - this is precisely what Yingluck's ministers were experts at and he is weakening politicians powers (through the redrawing of the constitution) so that they will not be able to do it again. So well done Prayuth in cleaning up politics and stopping politicians from enriching themselves through corruption once the new government is formed!!!
