I want to open a co-working space in Phuket I would like to know if a lot of you would be interested in using the facilities. I'd to hear your thoughts.

Thanks,

how are you going to address the legalities of operating a business ?

Is that renting out office space?

First post at 1827. Offline at 1828whistling.gif

already a few places in town offering this..

Immigration office dream. Didn't Chiang Mai have a crackdown on something like this with a bunch of punters being arrested?

No, they arrested a bunch of people because they worked FOR the coworking space, then released them all without charge once they ascertained that they did not. Nothing more heard of it, place is still running and has customers using the space.

I dunno about the co working space as pretty much individuals can work from home these days. Maybe offer business address services, conference room, reception and business center would be better. If you go the co working route then you're probably best with a theme, most likely internet start up, app development etc.

There is or used to be a business in Bangkok doing what the poster above describes. Their ads ran like "prestigious business address.....telephone answered with your company name..secretary service....conference rooms." In other words, I am running my business sitting in a dingy back room using a cheap mobile phone sitting behind a worn out laptop, but this way customers think I am sitting in an office at Silom road surrounded by posh secretaries.

Hey,

I like the idea of it, and would use it myself if I was in the area.

There are various ways to run that sort of thing. As someone else said, you could offer address/mail services, phone/secretary, conference rooms, etc..

There are different ways to charge for it as well. As with everything, there are details and scams within.

For example, if you offered mail services, you would have to document which Company "names" to sign for. And personally, I would document each customer and have them show proof of Corporate Registration/Incorporation. Otherwise you could be signing for something "bad".

Not that there will be much valuables there, but you also don't want to be changing locks everytime. So areas determined by access level, and keycards that you can deny access to make sense.

Video surveillance probably a requirement too. I would look at other "Virtual Office" and Co-working spaces around the world & of course Bangkok, to gain experience and make the best chance of success.

So a bit of startup Capital and a lot to think about... to ensure its a smooth operation from the start.

Good luck mate! Keep us informed.

The nay-sayers are either just negative or dont really understand the concept...

Coworking shares 20% with virtual offices but are a completely different thing.

Several running in chiang mai, more in bangkok, 1 in lanta, 1 (hopefully 2 soon) in pattaya and no idea about Phuket.

The potential is there and the legalities understood by authorities.

You need to find how many of the right people are interested in your close proximity. Many stay in their room and dont want to pay extra rent to surround themselves with like minded potential opportunities.

Many will like your place but wont want to travel so far.

But create the right space, strong community and add true value to all who visit and you are off to a good start.

Go for it! With the right services offered and marketing, you'll be sure to succeed!

We need as many wealth creators in Phuket as we can get!

Good luck!

Yes - understood to be a dependable source of brown envelopes.

Naivety abounds, apparently.

do not forget the food facilities, coffee machines, etc.. I used to be working for 12+ hours, and without a food facilitie people will exchange work place easily for a coffee shop (I did myself). Sometime everything people need is a quite quiet place to plan, work, .. specially those working at home, one day or two in a week is nice to go work outside in a different place.. good luck! thumbsup.gif

Quite a few famous companies are taking space there.

Website needs a bit of work...doesn't actually say where it is....you have to click through to facebook.

A great idea though and in Phuket town it may work with young professional Thais. Maybe...

I know very little on the legalities of such a business in Thailand, so pardon my ignorance, but if foreigners were to regularly use this premises for work, wouldn't they have to declare the address on their work permit, and then wouldn't the address show, for example, 20 foreigners working at the address, and then wouldn't that mean about 80 Thai's would have to be employed at the address?

Not with BOI or if the 80 thais worked at a different location but same company to the 20 farrang.

Can these people "technically" employ four Thai's, working out of their home address?

I don't think the intention is that these places are the place of work but more that they can be used to do some work sometimes. Otherwise I could put Starbucks down as my place of work on my work permit.
