The prohibition of hemp and cannabis in the U.S. wasn’t just about public health or drug concerns—it was deeply tied to economic interests and powerful individuals who stood to lose if hemp had continued to thrive as an industrial resource. 🧓🏻 The Usual Suspect: William Randolph Hearst Hearst was a powerful newspaper magnate who owned vast forests and paper mills. Hemp paper was cheaper, more sustainable, and required fewer chemicals to process than wood pulp. Hearst’s newspapers launched sensational, racially charged propaganda against cannabis, using the term “marijuana” (a then-obscure Mexican slang word) to associate it with crime and immigrants, especially Mexican and Black communities. He helped shape public opinion that cannabis was dangerous and foreign—paving the way for prohibition. 🧑🏻💼 Another Key Player: Andrew Mellon Mellon was the U.S. Secretary of the Treasury and a major investor in DuPont, which had just patented nylon and synthetic fibers—direct competitors to hemp textiles, rope, and plastic. Mellon appointed his nephew, Harry Anslinger, as the head of the newly formed Federal Bureau of Narcotics (FBN). 👮♂️ Harry Anslinger: The Enforcer Anslinger became the architect of marijuana prohibition. This killed the hemp industry, which had been thriving—used for rope, canvas (from “cannabis”), and even early U.S. flags. 📜 TL;DR: Yes—you’re right. Hemp was not banned because it was dangerous, but because it threatened powerful economic interests: Hearst wanted to protect his timber empire. DuPont wanted synthetic materials to dominate. Anslinger needed a new target post-Prohibition to justify his department. And so, through fear, racism, and media manipulation, hemp and cannabis were both taken down, and the stigma lasted for nearly a century. -
