Where to meet Expats? (Going to Thailand for 2 months)

Hello,

I'll be heading out to Thailand to visit my family there in April. I was born in the US and haven't been back to Thailand since 1998. I'm currently living in Chicago.

I'll be spending time in and outside Bangkok, and I was wondering if there is a good source for farang/expat-centric activities? I love to socialize with others. :)

But not Thais?

To get any reasonable response you would need to supply some information about your age, the activities that would interest you, etc. Don't be too eager to "socialize" with farangs that are too eager to socialize with you.

to get any reasonable response she would be better off providing no personal information here and taking her enquiry elsewhere.

The FCCT is a good location with cheap food and drinks. Penthouse of the Maneeya Center at Chidlom. Google FCCT.

Interesting, I didn't expect such much dislike of foreigners. They must be pretty awful.

Anyway, I'm 31 years old. I attend a major university in the Chicago area. My mom is from Chiang Rai and my dad is 2 hours SE of Bangkok. I also have a lot of family in Bangkok. I'll be in Thailand for two months. I'm taking a quarter off from school for R&R.

A few reasons for my post:

- I'm thinking about visiting Europe in the next two years. It'll be nice to get some perspective.

- My Thai is very limited, although I can understand most of it.

- I like diversity. I have friends of all kinds. (This is one of the reasons why I love Chicago so much.)

As much as I like my family, I want to expand my social circle and meet other travelers.

I've visited Thailand a few times, so I know what to expect. Of course Thailand isn't quite the same as the States.

I don't see the point of negative responses, honestly. We have difficult tourists/foreigners in the US too, but we shrug them off.

I tend to avoid gatherings of Farangs.

Its amazing how many farang use TV which is a farang centric forum, to tell other farang they don't like farang.

Ha ha brilliant.

Why is that?

I don't seem to be on the same social wavelength, I have a nice life here in a small village, have everything I want. To be honest listening to loud mouthed complaints about Thais, comments about Thai women, the lack of Farang food, Thai driving... I came here to experience Thai life and I try make it work the way I want it to, not to import Farang life style. (Apart from the beer and certain standards of courtesy).

You're spending too much time on here mate.

Seriously mate, why would you want to go to Thailand to mix with fellow Americans? The reason people come to Thailand to be ex-pats is to get away from their own country. You are coming to the wrong place. If you want to spend all your time with Americans, stay in America.

Do you really want to know why? I've been stressed out of my mind.

School has been incredibly overwhelming and I haven't had any luck finding a job here. Also, a friend killed himself last month and I lost another friend as well. It hasn't been easy.

My family has been begging me for years to go to Thailand. They believe a few weeks there will me help me emotionally and psychologically.

I'm going to Thailand to clear my mind.

It's unbelievable how hostile and judgemental people on Thaivisa are.

Also, I did NOT say that I only wanted to socialize with Americans.

I certainly wouldn't start here, unless you want to meet a load of miserable old sods.

Try http://www.meetup.com/cities/th/bangkok/

InterNations has a lot of Bangkok expat groups too, but you need to sign up to see them I think.

Also Twitter has a lot of fairly active Bangkok expat types with a more positive outlook on life than those you'll encounter on here.

Dont worry about the half empty glass moaners, they would moan anywhere.Thailand is a great place to visit and live, and safer than many countries too, but getting drunk at 4am in the morning WILL carry risks, the same asd anywhere in the world.

happy holidays

Some don't want to reminded of just how ordinary they really are relative to people with anything above an 8th grade education, a passport and enough for airfare

Throw a party with free bottled water and salty biscuits. You'll be friends with every English teacher in town.

Add beer and every one post wonder on this forum will attend.

I find the hip in the know crowd at Thaniya Plaza to be a breath of fresh air.......and sushi too!!

Amazing comment. Meaning I don't like a certain political party doesn't mean I won't be interested in what they do. I don't like you for instance, but I still take the trouble to answer.

Go to KS road. Plenty of Europeans to talk with about their own countries.

Am finding TV is the worst place to get advice if you're new to Thailand. Just plenty of old creeps being judgemental. Normally old Brits are good at this. They will complain about everthing. I really do feel for the poor Thai girl that has to put up with it all.
