PATTAYA: -- On Sunday afternoon a 60 year old Frenchman was arrested by Pattaya Police after he was caught by Security Guards at a North Pattaya Supermarket, attempting to leave with meat products he had not paid for.

Mr. Thomas Micallef was caught placing two bags of meat into another bag of meat which had just been weighed and priced. A security guard saw what Mr. Micallef was doing and followed him until he left the store.

The bag of meat was re-weighed and it was confirmed that he had loaded the bag with extra meat prior to him paying for the item at the checkout.

The police didn't make any effort, they were summoned. The security guard also did his duty. The foreigner made a mistake, no other person did.

I have known people who have shoplifted and they had plenty of money. They used to buy some steal some. Did it all the time at a Circle K convience store in Taipei. Caught on cctv and he got 6 months in jail. He was very bitter about it as he felt it was very unfair.

Remember Inspector Clouseau loved our hamburgers so much, he would stuff his pockets full of l'ambergere...and get stopped by officials at the airport?

This may be his younger brother...on a case.

Why does he need to steal? Perhaps he should return to his country to build more wealth, before coming back here for his fun.

Many people who steal, have an illness, nothing to do with poor

Shop lifting isn't always about that. Many are just petty, opportunist thieves.

Many shoplift for a living. I met one of them once here in Thailand, said he was a "professional shoplifter".

We've seen celebrities get pinched, and at military base exchanges, I've seen full bird Colonels and top enlisted ranks get caught out shoplifting; try to get out of it by showing they have the money in their wallet to pay for the item.

Maybe here, some think the Thais are dumb and will never catch or think they will escape suspicion because they are a rich Caucasian.

If he has enough money to pay for that first bag of meat, he has enough money to buy cheaper food in much greater quantities. Last time he was caught stealing salad cream; hardly something a starving person would go for.
