Shipping personal effects to Canada by sea

Featured Replies

Hi,

I am moving my gf and myself back to canada and have been looking into shipping our stuff back home...phuket to Ottawa, Canada. I got a quote from 'Sea Kargo' for a box 1m x 1m x 2m x 100kg for 580 GBP (850 US$). Just wondering if anyone knew if this was a decent rate? It includes all costs to get it to canada...any fees on the canadian side are extra. Also i would need to get the box to the port here in Phuket myself and pick it up from the port in Canada myself.

Also, any idea where a guy could get large crates like this somewhere on phuket. Im not looking for those exact dimensions just something close or maybe two smaller ones?

Thanks.

You say that price includes all fees to get it to Canada. Then mention you have to get it the port yourself. So not really all inclusive is it ?

Do you have any idea of the port charges in both Thailand or Canada.

Do yourself a favour and get a coupe of removal companies to give you a quote and ask them about all the fees, all quote are free of charge.

My guess is it will cost you at least 3 or 4 times more than you have been quoted.

I would also check airfreight. It might be cheaper at such low weight (cheaper incl. the port fees....)

Seems expensive.

A few months back, I paid 160USD per cubic meter for sea freight (port to port) from Miami to Bangkok, plus another approximately 40USD for all of the documentation/paperwork. I would think that the sea freight from Phuket to Ottawa shouldn't be too much more than that.

Dr. Dave,

Any chance you have the contact details for the service you used to ship your stuff? Thanks.

I used a Thai agent that's based in Los Angeles. He arranged all the documentation and port-to-port details and did a really good job for us. We dropped off our boxes at a trucking terminal in Miami, where they were loaded onto pallets, shrinkwrapped and they sent photos to our agent (who then sent to us). Our shipment was trucked up to Charlotte NC where it was loaded onto a ship. I think our pallets were unloaded in Singapore, and trucked up to Bangkok (Laem Chabang). The trucking in both directions was included in the 160USD per cubic meter.

I think our agent might deal only with people in the US shipping to Thailand, but you may want at least check his website. He was very responsive - always answering our emails within 24 hours. Website is duchesslogistics dot com, and the guy's name is Sam. Highly recommended.

consider properly constructed wooden crate so u can utilize the wood for projects once you get home.

wood and workmanship here is phenomenal

Excellent point, oby!

While living in the US, I imported crates from Indonesia, Vietnam and Hong Kong. I was always amazed at the wood they used for some of the crating - exotic hardwoods that were crazy expensive in the US, along with some junk wood. I used to be an avid woodworker, so I salvaged every last bit of the good wood for small furniture projects, picture frames, etc. The best part was that it was all free.
