What do these words mean?

Featured Replies

I got a sentence from a Thai friend and there are two words that I don't understand the meaning of or when to use it. The red sentence is her translation.

“He is my new friend. Why?

เขาเป็นเพื่อนใหม่ของฉันเองแหละทำไมเหรอ

What does this word mean and when to use it: แหละ

What does this word mean and when to use it: เหรอ

Thanks in advance guys.

แหละ is a common particle used as sort of an intensifier, not easily translated directly, used a bit like a verbal exclamation point. Just listen for particle usage in context and over time you might become comfortable with using them, but don't sweat them.

เหรอ is an alternative pronunciation of หรือ (which in turn is actually normally pronounced รึ).

It's short for หรือเปล่า which is used at the end of a statement to turn it into a question, equivalent to adding "or not?" to an English statement.

In the case of "ทำไมเหรอ", though I'd translate it as "[and] why not?"

The เหรอ just emphasises the ทำไม as a question. It just means why?
