Why do Thais never remove ugly stickers from new fridge, aircon etc?

I am Farang and have this sticker on the fridge...never saw a reason to remove it....it is just a fridge.....

Haha me too. Mine has fridge magnets scattered about at all angles. These make the sticker even harder to notice. I have a set of Sedona USA fridge magnets and I haven't even been to Sedona! Until I read this thread I didn't realize how care free I was.

I think it's a question of style and your living environment- many Thais like clashing colours and junk from markets etc.

Everything in my house and condo is chosen with care, carefully positioned to give an overall decorative style.

I dislike the big free standing fridges here- tried to get built in concealed ones- but unbelievably expensive.

So, I just think maybe we are more sensitive to those stickers- sticky stuff remover ( HG range at homeworks ) does the trick- but try out on a concealed area as these solvents can melt some plastics!

I must be odd then. I did not remove my efficiency rating sticker from my fridge freezer. To be honest, I never saw a problem with it.

Me too; maybe it's a farang OCD thing!

maybe some appreciate beauty more than others?

Your fridge is beautiful??

And so are you - and do you wear stickers?

whistling.gif Cultural conditioning on your part.

Why would you WANT to remove the stickers anyhow?

Because you were TAUGHT to remove them as a child back in limey land.

Question: If you had a 20 year old Rolls Royce in the U.K. would you remove the Rolls insignia from the hood/bonnet.

No, because you were TAUGHT that the insignia has prestige.... so you keep it on.

For many Thais being able to afford a new Fridge or an expensive washing machine also represents status.... to be quietly displayed ..... but not to be directly commented on (to showy if directly displayed).

To have the sticker quietly displayed to be seen, but not to be to showy is the "cool" way of letting it be known you can afford that "Farang" appliance is the correct way of displaying it in your house.

Sorry, but have to disagree. There's a big difference between an insignia or brand name plate that is an integral part of the product and (usually) easily-removed stickers which are placed only to promote a product's features and benefits so that potential buyers can compare similar ones side by side in a sales showroom. There are also clear plastic protective (against scratches or dust) peel-off stickers. All are intended by the manufacturer to be removed by the purchaser. Displaying them indefinitely is due either to ignorance or a cultural thing (status, face) but it's more common in 'developing countries' – and not just Thailand.

Who are you to say that these stickers are ugly?

Perhaps you consider plastic imitation wood to be ugly too?

And what are your feelings about adult women wearing pink mickey mouse shoes with furry balls glued on them? Come on, open up.

Let me guess, you are not a fan of brightly colored cake? You dislike orange iphones? The ex politician with the pink Bentley made you smile? You wish Thai talkshows would be abolished, or at least not hosted by ladyboys? Rosy glasses are not your style?

Who forces you to stay in Camp - land? Kitsch rules!

here is an unorthodox suggestion, why do you try talking to one and ask rather than asking here where no one has a clue

If everyone did that ... i.e "Communicate with the local population" ... this forum would be dead. Farang "Ghetoism" rules I'm afraid.

Scotch Adhesive Remover from Home Pro works perfect to remove stickers.

Stop wasting money on this "specialised" crap..all it needs is

1 Turpentine or white spirit

2 Gas, benzene , petrol

You've all forgotten lounge chairs! I really dislike sitting on the sticky plastic protecting new furniture, and it's left on. Leave a pool of sweat as you get up.

An associated illness is keeping the price tags on the bottoms of women's shoes. I often see Thai women all gussied up, clipping along in stilts, and the price tags flash every step. Hilarious.

I'm told heating the label with a hairdryer will do most of the job.

Could someone try it please?

Didn't own a hairdryer so I went out and bought one. I must say this method works a treat. Got all the stickers off my fridge, washing machine etc.

Now can anyone tell me how to get the stickers off my new hairdryer??

Of course.

Go out and buy some vacuum cleaner flexible piping and duct tape. Attach one end to the hairdryer nozzle and the flex the pipe.... ...................OMG this is getting stupid.....

I just bought an "Amazing Thailand" sticker to take home as a souvenir.

Can somebody advise me on how to get the price sticker off - as the combination would look rather silly on my fridge.

Last month I went to get the first yearly book service on my car. As I was getting in the drivers seat, the young service lady came up with a sticker and tried to stick it right in front of me on the top drivers side windshield. I said stop! She said ok, she went around the car, opened the passenger door, and tried to stick it on that side in a badly situated place. Needless to say, I stopped that too, stating I was smart enough to remember when the next service was due.

Many years ago I had a tow bar fitted to a vehicle. When I went to pick the car up I noticed a large sticker right across my back windscreen advertising the product.

When paying I asked what discount they were giving me. They seemed surprised at my cheek and said none. I then stated I wasn't interested in giving them free advertising on my vehicle and to remove the sticker. They did so, but with some bad humour.

Me too! I claim either a discount or an advertising fee - or remove them!

When you move to Thailand it is best to leave logic, and western thinking behind and start all over.

If you don't you may end up a sombie with lots of thainess.

If you do have logic why would you want to move to a place that does not have it?

Just logically thinking...

They do sell special sticker remover fluid, you know. I found it at Central or Tops or someplace and attacked the stickers on the toilets and appliances in our rental condo. Those stickers had to be at least 6 or 8 years old and boy-oh-boy they sure were hard to remove. That fluid did a real number on my manicure, too.

Heat the sticker with a hairdryer to soften the adhesive first. Usually peel off real easy without any mess.
