Residents in Doi Lor fight halal food factory plan

CHIANG MAI: -- LOCALS HAVE expressed strong opposition to a plan to set up a halal food industry in Doi Lor district in Chiang Mai.

More than 1,000 residents gathered at the Doi Lor District Office yesterday to submit a petition against the plan, and any other plan to encourage industrial development in their hometown.

Over 100 kamnan and village heads in the district also returned their identity cards, saying they would not assist government work until the plan is scrapped.

Sutin Surinta, the kamnan of Tambon Doi Lor, said locals were against all types of industries - not just halal foods.

"We are an agricultural zone. Please don't bring in factories," he said.

He said he and locals were worried that factories would spoil the environment and take water resources away from local farmers.

Their petition was addressed to Chiang Mai Governor Suriya Prasartbundit, but was submitted via Deputy Chiang Mai Governor Chana Paengpiboon.

Locals staged the protest after Suriya led a team to survey a target site without public consultation.

"We are dissatisfied. He has not informed locals in advance that there is a plan to develop a halal industrial park or industrial estate here," said Suk Khammeunyong, a 66-year-old resident.

Chana said Suriya and representatives from the Sheikul Islam Office will meet with locals soon to explain the plan.

Protesters said they were ready to throw away their Thai national ID cards if officials do not listen to their voices.

... beside that halal-certification is the worlds biggest scam, it is just one of the masked scams for getting funds for building mosques for worshipping an imaginary guy and funding terroristgroups like Hamas and ISIS/IS whatever! All their stories to cover up i pure TAQIYYA

Vaguely remember a lot of agricultural land in Thailand has been bought up by middle eastern countries to secure food production. This may be part of the same. Halal meat for export back to Kuwait or wherever.

They tried the same thing with the Chiangmai -Lamphun highway, little if no public consultation. Zero transparency.

Protest groups and petitions managed to reroute the proposed highway and it's possible it may be scrapped altogether.

Follow the money I guess.

I'm with the residents. Keep industrial parks and factories in BKK and Samut Prakan.

imagine, every time they slaughter something, they start using the speaker praising alaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa, la la la la, lalalalala, la, la la , la la, la laa laa laaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

The article clearly states that the residents oppose industrial development of any kind in their area, not just this particular venture, and there's no mention of resistance on religious grounds. Yet those facts don't deter our TVF bigots from taking the opportunity to impugn Islam in general. It's unfortunate when such intolerant voices take up residence in what remains a very tolerant country.

It's so scary because chiang mai is so far away from the thai south. This is really nuts. Those in western countries should know about this islamic spread everywhere. Please they have been doing this in the past through babaric conquests and now using huge births and political correctedness to spread into non muslim areas. It's just ridiculous.

I dont think there is anything scary about it. If you produce halal meat here in the north of thailand you can sell it anywhere in the world. None it may go to the south or even Chiang Mai. Most chicken sold in the uk comes from Thailand which is a lot further than the south.

If you get out and about a bit you will notice there are mosques all over thailand. At least three in the city that i know of and even a muslim area of town.

There are muslims all over Thailand, historically from, to name but a few, China, Burma, Pakistan, not just Malay.

It makes no sense to slaughter food in the South and then waste money transporting it to North when you can just slaughter it and pack it in the vicinity.
