Hello and Sawasdee khrap,

Just a little reminder for those who might have forgotten to do their tax declaration form. I just found that out this morning and could finally sort it out.

The deadline was today. For those who forgot about it, there'll be a fine to pay, when doing it later. Thought it's better to post it here.

Filed tax on 6 March.

To add to OP, Immigration Offices might want to have a copy of the PND91 and the tax clearance receipt when applying for an extension of stay. Labour might want the same when renewing the work permit.

^^^ Yep - after getting all the stamps at the tax office, retrieve the forms and copy them (I use the iPad to make a copy). The copy is for visa/work permit later in the year.

Amazing, how my wife managed to do that return without my involvement.

Thanks for sharing - we need to get our ducks in a row. Shame about schools not deducting anything.

At least in Chiang Mai they stopped that requirement many years ago. Also had mine done online by the secretary and appears a healthy return coming. smile.png

Thanks for the reminder, I am all done & dusted, form stamped & paid the extra as per form last Friday.

Yes, they have given a grace period until 4pm on the 8th April.

For those of you yet to file ,, get on it & if your "employer" does it for you, check that they have.

It is not their responsibllity & you & only you are liable.

My school says i don't need to pay tax this year cos i have only been working a few months and the tax office hasn't sent anything to the school for me yet. Apparently, they have to send something to my school, then i must pay tax.

Does this sound right?

Once a work permit has been issued, you do have to file your tax, The tax department didn't sent anything to my school, either.

Those without a work permit fly under the radar.

OP, did you cash in your SS like you indicated you were going to do? Just curious.

Terry

Still one month to my 55th birthday. I won't cash it in, until the director registers the school. Then I'd go for it and start over again.

Otherwise, I'd screw myself and would be without an insurance after only six months.I know how important an insurance is.

Filing the PND91 and paying tax are two different things.

Pay, no.

File, yes.

Even if you just worked for 1 or 2 months, you need to file a tax return, you won't pay anything, but you need to file it and make copies of the form to show the department of labour when you goto extend your work permit next time.

You'll likely need a form which your school fills out detailing your income & their details, as well as your work permit and maybe passport. It's a realtively simple process, and if you ask them to help you setup an online account, you can just do it online next year (And then, provided you remember the tax number of the school, you can just file your tax online without requiring any documents etc).

I remember a woman who worked at a school in Sisaket about ten years ago.

She didn't listen to us to at least get the paperwork done, drove to Bangkok just to find out that she had to go back to make her tax clearance.

The Immigration at the airport denied her departure. Her cheap ticket was non refundable and she must have lost more than her temper....-facepalm.gif

Correct, especially teachers working for agencies. Once we had a teacher get slugged with a tax bill, as the agency neglected to take taxes from the salary paid. This was a new teacher who was totally unaware about paying taxes and the agency said nothing about it until tax time! I think they left it up to the teacher to deal with their own taxes. That's a bit rough. That caused a major problem when renewing the wp/visa.

It's always best to do taxes online, and do it as early as possible. I usually get a check in the mail one or 2 weeks after filing on the net. Once I had to do it in the office and it was at least 2 months to get my check.

Sorry, but how many "half", or "civilized" countries do you know where you just don't pay taxes, for whatever reason?

Just curious, do you file back at home (USA,UK, AUS..) ? Don't plan on returning... don't want the SSI, moving on..from the IRS..

Thanks for the responses guys!

I will ask my school for their details to file the declaration, though i suspect it will still be late. What is the penalty for late declaration, does anyone know?

Is this declaration something the school have done on my behalf? (since they have copies of my passport and original work permit anyway). The school went with all the other teachers to the tax office, but told me i didn't have to go.

Also, the school is supposed to renew my work permit over the next few days (from 3 months to 1 year), so it'll be interesting to see if they do it without tax receipts, right?

Hey,

I seem to have a similar problem as EmptyHead.

I have only been working a few months and the school is just about to change my whole work permit due to a spelling mistake in my name, otherwise it would just be the 3 month to 1 year extension).

They too said i don't need to worry about tax this year, but i don't know if they have filed a declaration for me, but they told me i didn't have to do anything.

I think I will be late no matter what cos i need the school's details too right?

Thanks. And yeah, I am interested to know the penalties for late declaration too. If anyone can tell, that would be great.

Don't forget to get as many deductions as you can. On my last tax return my wage was stated ad 360 000 baht. I paid just a little over 3000(three thousand) baht in tax.

If you are from the US, the first $99,000 that your earn overseas is exempt from taxation, but you do need to file forms 1040 and 2555EZ. Just fill in the taxable income amount as 0.

I have no particular plans to return to the US, but spending a few minutes filling out the forms every year keeps my options open.

Should you support your wife's parents, then you might end up paying nil, when married with one child.

Then you'll be given a form your parents in law have to sign. No details and pretty common these days.
