Popular Post Sparkles
The movies I have watched were never short. When I got my temporary license there was only a color blind test. I don't go to Immigration for 90 day reports. I also don't take shortcuts to avoid police checkpoints. BFD! The movie takes something like an hour, and it is actually well-done for that sort of thing in English. Thank you for supporting my comment that the movies are longer than 20 minutes. I wasn't complaining, I was pointing out that the video is not 20 minutes. The video I watched at Hang Dong, in English, was exactly 55 minutes long. With the colour blind test and processing the whole deal was done and dusted in under 2 hours. I received a 6 years licence as by some strange quirk my previous licence had expired 2 days past my birth date, others have had a similar experience . I have used my Thai DL to obtain my tax card, as proof of address, and when booking in at a hotel/resort, ID with phone co etc I have been stopped at a check point in a car once in 15 years in Hua Hin. Ironically they were checking foreigners to ensure if they were on a long term visa extension that they had a Thai licence. So for 2 hours out of my life I am a legal driver in Thailand and can also use it in my home country Australia and to hear the getting of a Thai licence is a hassle beggars belief.

hml367
Sparkles, Did you read my post where it said I wasn't complaining? I was pointing out that it takes longer than 20 minutes. Some people don't like to ve corrected. Folkguitar implied it takes only 20 minutes... That is not correct. Then people talk like I referred to avoiding checkpoints- I never said that. Yes of course I did.I am not criticising you or anyone else its everyone's choice.I just was pointing out the benefits of having a Thai licence and being legal and the fact that its simply a 2 hour, hassle free process . The very fact that I can us my Thai licence on my annual trips back to Australia where I rent a car is in itself enough as I no longer pay for an Australian licence I don't use. Suggest everyone chill out.

Wow! 5 times in 4 months... must be working off some seriously bad Karma! Can you tell us for what offenses you were fined? What laws did the police say you were violating? Popular Post CNXBKKMAN
I got caught up in check point in 2000 , no helmet or license. Police wouldn't let me pay on the spot said I had to pay at the station. I was in a rush to return the motorbike back to the hire shop. When I explained this they just let me through, no fine no nothing. Stopped again on the way to Suandok hospital. I explained my gf had just been bitten by a dog and we were going for a rabies shot(which was true). Again no fine we were just let on our way. Just been to a 7-11 at about midnight on my bicycle. Cycling carefully the wrong way up a one way street towards Chang Phueak bus station. Check point ahead so started to ride on the pavement instead! When I reached the check-point the police actually moved out of the way to let me through. I didn't even have to brake. Sometimes Thailand is brilliant.
Jdiddy
I got a lift from a guy who had a radio scanner tuned to the cop frequencies, obviously you need to learn Thai but sounds like a good way to avoid the checkpoints
Trujillo
So let me get this straight. This thread is about evading a police checkpoint. (Avoiding police trap on corner of Huaykaew and the moat) If you have all the proper documents and are observing the law(s) (wearing a helmet, not driving illegally, etc.), then being stopped results in no action by the police (other than slightly delaying you). So this thread is for those people who do not have the proper documentation (license, registration, etc.) and who are breaking one or more traffic laws (no helmet, driving while intoxicated, for example). This is a very odd thread. How can we break the law(s) and avoid being caught. ...something seems somewhat amiss here.

LannaGuy
can't see the issue what would you do in 'farangland'? you'de wear a helmet and have insurance and have a license I have seen a wonderful change in chiang mai over last 5 years with most people wearing helmets now whereas before it was a rarity and if that saves lives and crippling injuries isn't that a good thing?
