Ethiopian maid accuses WHO official in Thailand of slavery

Featured Replies

..........So where is her passport? did she file her residency every 90 days? Does she have a work permit? These people, WHO Officals need to be picked up and charged, and forced to pay the woman back wages, and pay the fine for failing to comply with immigration violations. Also immigration needs to explain why they never inquired why they never checked on this Ethiopian after her first 90 day not reporting. Both sides need closer examination!

If not Thai, I'm guessing, Malaysian, Singaporean or Honky Kongky. If Westerners, the Thais would have photos of their passports posted up.

  • If true, what a lowlife scum!! Another one belonging to the privileged taking advantage of the most vulnerable !! Disgusting!!

I don't think the working allegation is "slavery" like condition, its probably that the maid is not getting paid or whats wants a raise and has a dispute with her employer. $92 could be very likely if the WHO was based in Africa and they think that $92 / month is consider as high in Africa, nonetheless they should be ashamed of paying such low salary.

Maid probably knows that minimum wage here is 300 baht / day, hence being pay $92 is "slavery" like wages. Either way I don't see why these officials should be covered up.

Surely the organisation this alleged grub works for is WHO_ WE HELP OURSELVES

Reprehensible, but I think the "tricking her to work" charge may only apply to the dog she was sleeping with!

People are innocent till proven guilty. However, it is good police practice to interview suspects and all concerned immediately after the crime is reported to capture the facts.

what is the source of your information on "good police practice"?

because logic would dictate that an interview carried out by police will not last long if you call them in immediately someone makes an accusation, you would only have a single question to ask ....

someone said you did this , did you ?

and of course they say no

where do you go now ?

no more questions , thank them for coming in , write up a report saying they say they didn't do it and go back to the accuser saying the accused said they didn't do it ?

seriously do you people think before you post ?

Police officials can interview you as many times as they care to. And they can ask you any questions the want. Standard practice is to start getting statements so that you can build a scaffold for the inquiry. BTW, you were doing fine until your final snarky comment.

NGO bigshots are some of the worst scum in SE Asia.

The World Health Organisation is not an NGO fyi, but a part of the United Nations stable, which is inter-governmental. Therefore, this guy works for a GO, albeit working under a distinct set of rules that leaves ample opportunity for some to flout them, as in this case.

What is your problem with NGOs? who incidentally have been there when this maid needs help and are often the ones who blow the whistle on government abuses of power and authority, at least in the semi-democratic SE Asian countries that permit them.

how true before i realised what scum bags so many of them where i worked for a short time 40 odd years ago for a UN agency. Any non western staff were treated as complete shit and sadly many mom western staff while paid well treated their maids and rest as bad as slaves. I was so disgusted with both UNM agency and the NGO high wigs we worked with particularly many UK and USA charities. The religious missionaries were as bad.

its been exposed so manny times when i was working there and several times in 40 years since i left in disgust but as always swept under the carpet. No progress at all in 40 years. Ex colonial staff from ex colonies are particularly bad and often given top agency jobs at huge salaries when they were no longer needed in colonies. UK was worse but also for all european ex colonial staff.

WHO is just another corrupt prganization, it couldn't care less about the health and well-being of people..in fact it is quite the opposite. There are many unreported stories of this very shady organization...

Another case of crooks investigating crooks how many thai girls are held prisoners in thai karaoke joints case closed

If true lock their arse up

Besides making a ridiculous comment about NGOs, you don't even know what they are. WHO is not an NGO, it is an agency of the United Nations; in other words, far from being a non-governmental organisation (NGO), it is an organisation that represents all the governments in the world. And as a UN body, it is filled with often unworthy people chosen for political reasons, which again makes it absolutely the opposite of an NGO, which are staffed by sincere people chosen for their competence. So get hold of all that before abusing NGOs.
