I usually end up browsing through the forum when I have questions and can find the answers. I think I need a little help this time.

I'm male in the USA, in my late mid thirties. Have been to Thailand 3 times, from 6-8 weeks each with passport but no visa. I always end up rescheduling my exit flight. It looks like the cost of doing that has gone up at most of the travel sites.

I've known my fiancee for almost 8 years. We are considered married in her village but she is a christian and from the city and we need to do the church thing.

We're trying to make plans for marriage this November. From what I understand, my best option for staying for an extended period, I must apply for tourist visa for 60 days and apply for extended stay while in Thailand. If I want to stay longer I must go to KL or Singapore and attempt to apply for a second visa, maybe an O but probably just another visitor's, at an American Embassy outside of Thailand. Does that sound like I'm headed in the right direction at least? Is it legal to marry on a tourist visa?

I want to buy a ticket soon so I can make a plan around it. My main concern right now,

I was looking at the Royal Thai Consulate of new york website http://thaiconsulnewyork.com/english/vtourist.php

Under 'required documents for tourist visa' it has a section 'additional requirements' for people holding: 'Travel document of any countries' or 'Re-entry permit'. I don't know what those are, so I'm not sure if I need to worry about it, I'm guessing it does not apply to me. But one of the things it has listed is a confirmed round-trip ticket and itenary.

This got me wondering about the plane ticket. Who is going to ask to see my tickets, do I need an itenary before I apply for a visa? When I leave the US or when I arrive to Bangkok and they stamp my passport at the airport, do I need to have a return ticket that says I am leaving in 2 months. If it has a return date of 3 months, 6 months, or if it is a one way, who will question that.

Is it ok to ask opinions about airlines here, or is that a nono?

Thanks for any help or insight, JM

1. Check marriage requirements - US Embassy web site Bangkok has information - you do this legal process at a District Office here.

2. Why will you need to stay an extended period? Marriage only takes a day or two. Yes it can be done on a tourist visa. If a single entry tourist visa 2+1 months is not long enough perhaps a 2 entry which would provide 2+1 exit/entry 2+1?

3. American Embassy does not issue visas to Thailand. You obtain from a Royal Thai Consulate.

4. Re entry permits and non passport travel documents do not apply to you.

5. Round trip ticket I believe is only required for non US passport holders in the US.

6. If you have a visa you are not likely to be questioned on tickets.

7. Use the travel section to ask questions about airlines.

8. As it appears you do not intend to leave would suggest you also check on legal employment if that is going to be required and make use of the various forums to gain as much knowledge as you can. This is not Vermont and there are many more hurdles than crossing a state line when making the move you seem to be thinking about.

It could be any state. The point was you do not have freedom to come here and live or work without meeting specific criteria; unlike a move to another state.

I figured no one wanted to read a book on my life story so I tried my best to cram my situation into two paragraphs in order to aviod the "this isn't kansas" comment, which I got anyway. I need that like a hole in the head. If things were easy I would have been married over 7 years ago. Regardless, I do appreciate the information in the replys. I realize this forum gets a lot of the same questions over and over and it must get tiring.

It would appear, going by their website, that the Thai embassy in Washington DC does require a intenery when applying for a visa, where as the embassy in NY confirmed on the phone they do not. This was confusing for me while looking for information because I would assume that there would be a consistancy in the terms of the Thai embassys in the US.

The visa application asks for a date entering Thailand, which would suggest I should buy a ticket before requesting a visa. If I buy a ticket that is off by a day or even up to a week will this present a problem when entering the kingdom or will they just cut the missed days from the 60 day stay?

My second concern is that I own a wild bobcat, will I have any issues importing him as a dog?
