The explosion occurred at 9 am on Soi Wachiratham Sathit 12 off Soi Sukhumvit 101/1.

The three workers emptied the garbage bin into their garbage truck when the bomb exploded.

The three workers were rushed to the Bang Na 1 Hospital. They were identified as Surat Sitthipanya, 21 who suffered a big wound on his right hand and needed a surgery, Ammporn Sae-be, 47, who suffered a wound on his left leg, and Koon Jianchai, 45, who had ear problem.

Small bomb explosion injures a garbage collector on Sukhumvit 101

BANGKOK: -- A garbage collecting employee of Bang Na district office was injured when ping pong bomb inside a garbage bin exploded on Sukhumvit 101 Tuesday morning.

Virat Sitthipanya, 21, the garbage collector, was removing the garbages inside the bin to the dump truck when two explosions were heard.

He was rushed to nearby hospital for wound on the right hand.

Forensic and Explosive Ordnance Disposals were alerted of the explosions and arrived at the area for inspection.

The scene at Soi Vajiratham Satit 14 off Sukhumvit 101 was sealed off traffic for fear of more explosions.

Later they said the explosions were from small or ping pong bombs in the garbage bin which might be thrown by gangsters to avoid police checkpoints.

Royal Thai Police commissioner Pol Gen Somyot Phumphanmuang said this morning that he was reported of the explosions, and said the ping pong bombs might belong to teenagers engaged in a brawl but threw them away in the bin to avoid police check.

Gangsters, brawling teenagers, well that's two classes of suspects down and more to come so standby next for the usual list of possible motives plus possibly Songkran ' revelry '. After the contradictory statements about Samui i doubt anything's been learned.

If these were the so called 'ping pong bombs' then they are used by farmers to scare birds from crops are readily available.

If they are then it is very unlikely that there was any political intent more likely that someone (probably young) took them to BKK to use in some gang related thing or just to throw around in songkran, then dumped them when they thought they might get caught.

Although why they would explode when dumped from the bin to the rubbish truck is a mystery for they are usually very stable and a fuse needs to be lit to make them explode.

The red shirts don't think they can win the next election but think they can bomb their way back into power. Don,t think that will work try another plan.

Well done Sir!!

Within half an hour of the incident taking place you have already decided the motive and placed the blame.

Almost faster than the RTP.

As for the elections, why do you think they are put on hold?

Maybe, just maybe because the powers are fully aware of, that free elections will see another red government.

Now we are just waiting for the police to reveal that they have found red shirt memorabilia and ID cards on the crime scene. And one of the ID card names had a FB account with the username B OMB.

Narrow minded people like you are more dangerous than any bombs..............

Now I'm waiting for the quote of a high ranking official stating: it was most probably the act of someone who was dissatisfied with the garbage disposal- no political background was detected thus far. Tourists are safe.

Go on then expand my mind who else has been planting bombs in Bangkok in the last few years? If evidence is found that it was not the Red shirts I will be surprised, wont you?

Maybe it was uty6*** who did it, just to blame the red shirts for something.

It's sad (in my mind) that you feel the need to be Judge and Jury unless you have facts at hand that we mortals don't.

As far as we (mortals) know, the motive could be one of many and therefore the same goes for the perpetraters.

Mindless judgements can make more havock than bombs sometimes!

They have a fuse which needs to be lit to make them explode.

When we were teenagers we would fill the ping pong balls with "strike anywhere" match heads. They will ignite on hard impact or being crushed.

the ping pong bombs might belong to teenagers engaged in a brawl but threw them away in the bin to avoid police check.

Can the plod work out if there was in fact a police checkpoint in the area since this bin was last emptied? If there was, it would give a lot of plausibility to this being true.

I am sorry for the garbage collectors who were injured in the course of doing their job, but overall this is almost a non-event. The headline borders on newsmongering as it comes on the heels of a larger and more deadly blast in Samui.

As mentioned above, it is sure to bring out the rainbow of keyboard warriors who would have otherwise ignored the topic if it was titled "City workers injured while emptying trash bins".

Ping pong bombs? Injured three people? Who probably get injured a lot anyway on a very hard job? If every garbageman who got injured on the hand warranted an article, there would be nothing else in the paper.

But, since everyone is all worked up, I think it was the:

jihadists or

yellow shirts or

red shirts or

the junta or

Yingluck herself or

Suthep himself or

gangsters or

the Dalai Lama or

some meddling kids.

And I'm sure of it. I could be a local cop!
