BANGKOK: -- Police and the Office of the Anti-Money Laundering Commission yesterday seized assets from two buildings owned by former Investigation Bureau Crime Suppression Division chief Pongpat Chayapan in Nonthaburi's Pak Kret district.

The first building, a four-floor home where Pongpat spent most of his time, featured paintings, valuable porcelain, Buddha statues, artefacts and ivory decorations.

Officials found four vaults hidden underground at the home, while every floor had a large vault.

The second building is located 200 metres away and is a shop that sells artifacts such as Buddha statues, paintings, and porcelain.

Assistant police chief Lt-General Prawut Thawornsiri said military and police officials had already seized Pongpat assets from 18 locations and only some land remained to be seized.

He said the four-floor building had also been seized.

Assets that could be easily damaged or were difficult to maintain would be auctioned and those that were kept by the state would be sold after Pongpat's case concluded, he said.

They found an old painting and a violin in the collection, which were identified as a Rembrandt and a Strativarius.

Unfortunately, Strativarius couldn't paint, and Rembrandt made lousy violins

Ha. Who says crime busting doesn't pay!?

Is that the guy in the uniform? Give him an Emmy for posing just oh so well. The look on his face tells it all. He knows he has lost face big time.

This case is a bit confusing to me. Why in the world would

Pongpat rake in cash, use it to buy artifacts, and then have

the troubles of warehousing all of it in secret vaults ?? Plus

when you are caught it looks really bad. Far better to have

the money in offshore bank accounts. Perhaps these top

level corrupt guys are so stupid they do not understand how

to move their money out of Thailand ?? Hey perhaps

I could start a new business helping them.....

The uniformed man in the picture is Assistant police chief Lt-General Prawut Thawornsiri. who, I am sure, looks stunned by the amount of property that Pongpat managed to amass during his police career.

Please try and pay attention.

For some reason this pose reminds me of Benny Hill.

Pongpat was at it for years yet nobody knew ! rolleyes.gif

If a situation we can't talk about hadn't happened would we be reading stories like this about him ?

I don't know how well quoted he was with the current powers but the situation that can't be mentioned certainly removed his previous insurance and even if he was in with he current regime there's no way anyone could have saved him.

Even with his guilty pleas i can't remember anyone being arrested, in court and dealt with at the speed it all happened.

If the head is bad... then what is the state of the rest of the body?

They're certainly making an example of this guy (whose greed was astonishing), and it's not hard to understand why. There are dirty cops, and there are dirty cops who pull strings that shouldn't be pulled. Looks like his entire family is going to be left utterly destitute. Except for one. For now.

The man was obviously an utter git when it comes to stealing, and ever a bigger moron when

it comes to hiding the loot....

Perhaps, he did it for so long with impunity and never even had any problems,...and was assured the previous government would close there eyes forever, and he probably taught the previous government would stay forever to.....! som nam na....

He did probably everything criminal in the book,....with impunity. it made him arrogant and blind. Greed comes in mind to.!

He was also hailed as a hero, so it got to his head....

NOW I'M GOING TO HAVE TO EXAGGERATE THE PRICE OF EVIDENCE AGAIN.

OK to steal just do not get caught. Immediate loss of face similar to a kid getting caught with his hand in the cookie jar. I wonder how you reconcile this in the afterlife.

How do you know he doesn't have large amounts of money and assets outside of Thailand? You don't?

He's jealous, that's what he is. In fact, he's so jealous he forgot to point his finger at the loot.coffee1.gif

How do you know he doesn't have large amounts of money and assets outside of Thailand? You don't?

Back in more normal days, if he had large amount of cash

offshore, he would be able to use some of it as a bargaining

chip to cut jail time. Do not think that will work in the present

days. Besides if he is indeed in jail for 31 years, any

money he has stashed offshore will just be buying Ferraris

for any children he has...... Not any good to him as given

his age, that amount of jail time is in essence a death sentence.

Guess the only thing that would save him would be

Thaksin coming back into power..cheesy.gif
