Tsunami Drills Will be Held in Phuket Away from Tourists

On May 7th, a full-scale tsunami evacuation drill will be held on Koh Sireh in Phuket. The event was supposed to take place on Christmas Day, but was postponed because it was too close to the 2004 disaster that hit the country.

The event will take place on the isle of Sireh because it is lightly populated. The isle has also not held a full-scale drill before, so the island’s population needs more training than other areas of Phuket where drills have been conducted in the past.

During the drill, residents and officers will be able to practice rescue and evacuation drills. Equipment that is meant to help with tsunami disaster relief and warnings will also be tested at this time.

The event will begin when the National Disaster Warning Center issues a warning that Phuket will be hit with a tsunami. Tsunami warnings will be announced in five languages, and the drill will also include simulated emergencies, such as motor vehicle accidents, that will occur during a normal evacuation.

Thailand will conduct an awareness campaign so that all local residents and tourists are alerted of the drill and are aware that a tsunami is not hitting Phuket. Tsunami practice drills are conducted yearly in Thailand.

Step in the right direction. Need to do it every year and have serious people evaluating, giving real critiques and tracking plans of actions.

cheesy.gif Yes, I can't remember when Portugal last had a tsunami:

So, apart from that... I'll tell you now the result of this drill and the conclusions drawn:

Result: Everything went perfectly to plan.

Conclusion: Our procedures are perfect, no need to do any more.
