MRT Pra Ram 9 Flooding?

Featured Replies

How bad was the flooding in this area, near Fortune Shopping Center? My wife has a very good job opportunity that would require living there.

Was it that long ago? Wow, I'm losing track of time! But, yeah, the bad one.

Thank you very much, Crossy, for the info. That's a load off my mind.

Closest the flooding got to Bangkok on that side of town was between Mor Chit and Saphan Khwai skytrain stations as I recall.

Thank you for helping with the 'picture'. I live in Chiang Mai so I never had to know this till now. Much appreciated.

People were predicting it was going to go all the way into downtown Bangkok (Lower Sukhumvit) but it never did. At Mor Chit for a few days there was a raised platform at the bottom of the stairs where you could board trucks to transport you further out towards Don Mueang and beyond.. The Mor Chit carpark was under water with just one car almost submerged. About half way to SK the water ended. Shops and office buildings all along the skytrain route were sandbagged but as it turned out they weren't needed, at least on that side of Bangkok.

I just pulled up some maps. What utter immensity. We had a scare at my house because the river behind my house flooded the street and gardens. Another 40cm and the house would have flooded so I know the feeling but we were spared. We live in an older moo baan so it's low. All the new construction--and there's a lot of it--is built much higher so the water has less area to go into.

All of Lat Prao street from Phahoyothin to Ratchada and past 41? but don't think it spread too far down on Ratchada...so by Rama 9 MRT should area should be OK. I took off as soon as they brought in giant army trucks and boats and rafts to get around in. All MRT stations closed and underground parking garages got flooded when the main street did.

To answer the OP I can tell you for a fact that the 2011 floods didn't get any further south on Ratchada rd than the Klong Latphrao bridge which is basically between MRT Ratchada station and Suttisan station. That is basically 3km north of Rama 9.

Also, remember that all MRT stations are built with flood proof barriers, most of the northern stations closed 2 or 3 entrances during this period. The MRT DID NOT close any stations during the floods, I was using it everyday at that time.

Your consideration for living near Fortune should have nothing to do with floods but everything to do with traffic & transport and related pollution issues. If it is a long term move then the realignment of the Orange line to rama 9 will be a huge plus.

Thank you for all this info. It's very helpful. My wife's company is in the same building as the condo they'll be providing her so she won't have to commute, fortunately. The pollution can be just as bad in Chiang Mai so hopefully that'll be tolerable. It might not be OK for me but I'm staying in Chiang Mai in our house for now and she'll visit me two or three times a month. I think Chiang Mai will always be home.
