I'm looking to upgrade my office desk and have seen the following style all around Thailand. They are pretty cheap at about 15K for a big desk and look pretty nice and impressive.

The question is of course if they are of some decent and lasting quality, or only nice to look at.

Anyone experience about this style of desk that he can share?

Amazing. Nobody on this forum has ever purchased, or know someone who did, such a desk ? They are available all over Thailand, and at MBK there are several companies that sell them.

I purchased one Anthony, great desk, well looks great anyway. I am pretty sure they are not all wood, but have some resin component in them.

I purchased one a few years ago. I think it was 12,000 at that time. It is adequate, but the construction is not all that good. Mostly held together with dowels which became loose over time. But.....I still use the desk.

The thing is that I'm not in Bangkok or thereabouts, so difficult to source those shops.

Here in Pattaya I have found a shop that makes decent furniture, and have a desk which is a mix of Teak and Teak plywood. It looks much less impressive of course, and also cost about 20.000Baht, which is considerably more than the 12.000 > 15.000 the other desks can be had depending on the model you choose.

Opinions which one would be the best choice are welcomed. The desk is pictures below and however there isn't a view from the back, it is carved similar to the side.

Have you had a look at the furniture suppliers in the area at the front of Homeworks?

There is one outdoor (covered) unit there that has some very solid and posh looking desks. It's on the right hand side, adjacent to the Jim Thompson shop.

I am not in the market for office furniture so I have never examined them closely or even looked at the prices - but if you are in the area it might be worth a look.

The shop in front of Homeworks sells the desks as pictured in the OP, they only inflate the price considerably. There are several furniture dealers in Pattaya that have the same desks at much lower price.

Come on guys, let me hear your opinion of which one desk would be the best value for money.

One similar to the one in the OP at 15K or the one in post #7 at 20K.

I can't really see the first ones. Those in post 7 look suspiciously like fiberboard vacuum covered with a false wood grain paper. It's the way the wood grain runs through the shaper edges and doesn't look natural. I'd inspect it, feel, look for grain texture not just color, etc.

Ask if you can see one knocked down before it's assembled. That will be a dead giveaway as to what it is, when you can see the raw edges before assembly. They most likely ship knocked down and in boxes.

The one in post #7 is from a well known furniture builder, who is in the business for maybe 20 years at least, and is made in part of solid teak and other parts are teak plywood.

Like the footing, the rounded edges, the drawers and the carved sides are solid teak, while the top is actually teak plywood on top of solid wood.

The ones in the OP are pretty impressive and heavy but are 100% veneer, and are probably produced in China.

This picture may give you a better idea of the desks in the OP.

Thanks for the replies. The desks look impressive, but I am a bit worried about how they will stand the test of time.

I say the same thing about myself.

So the question is actually, is the veneer desk a bad choice, or is it actually only a matter of personal choice and it will it probably last as long as the other one?

i have one all but the same, do not have a problem & they come with a set of draws & a side cabinet. Looks good & no problems so far..

Can I ask how long ago you purchased, and if there are no problems with the veneer losing it's shine on the worktop or peeling at the edges of the drawers or legs when it get wet from cleaning the floor?

I really like the style, however I would go for a model without side cabinet, but I always worry when something is too cheap to be true.

I paid about 15K from memory , it's about 6 months old. Not a problem, always tell staff to be aware around anything wood when mopping. As I said 6 months & not a blemish.
