NLA whip: A referendum on new charter depends on Cabinet-NCPO

BANGKOK, 3 May 2015 (NNT) – The spokesman for the National Legislative Assembly whip said that many factors are to be considered before any decision concerning a public referendum on the new Constitution can be made.

NLA whip's spokesman Jate Siratharanont said that a new charter which is not approved by the people would likely be subject to criticism and rejection.

However, Mr. Jate said that a public referendum involves both pros and cons because the draft of the new charter contains as many as 315 sections which can be quite difficult for members of the public to understand thoroughly.

With a lack of complete understanding, a public referendum on the draft charter may well end up with some parts being rejected by some groups of people, and probably failure to gain approval of the whole draft, he added.

The NLA whip's spokesman went on to say that, in order for a public referendum to take place, the next election would have to be delayed by a few more months, and the interim Constitution amended to allow for this process to happen.

Mr. Jate said that the final decision on this issue should be made by the Cabinet and the National Council for Peace and Order.
