Chiang Mai: –Oy (last name unknown), 50, died yesterday in a fire which started at her home before spreading to burn down other 20 shanty houses located at Chang Klan cemetery, Mueang Chiang Mai district.

Police and fire fighters spent more than one hour to put out the fire.

When Chiang Mai police station superintendent Colonel Weerayut Prasopchokchai arrived at the scene, the fire had already engulf the entire slum.

Some 20 fire trucks were mobilised to contain the fire covering 2-rai area.

Weerayut said the slum had no electricity supplies and that some residents had to use candles for household lighting.

He said he speculated that the fire at Oy’s home might have been caused by fallen-off candle.

Neighbours said Oy was in a drunken stupor when the fire started. Oy was often on the drinking binge and her house caught fire three times previously although they managed to put them out, they said.

Everyone was fleeing the spreading fire before realising too late that she was still inside her blazing home and could not get out.

She died before the arrival of firemen and police.

Chiang Mai vice mayor Natchudet Wiriyadiloktham said caretakers and their relatives lived in the slum.

The municipal authorities arranged temporary shelters for fire victims to stay overnight at the cemetery before providing relief supplies today’s morning.

Police and forensic officials will today check the scene in order to determine the cause of fire.

The authorities have yet to decide whether to allow slum dwellers back into the cemetery or to relocate them to live elsewhere.

Demon rum takes another one of us. Addiction/alcoholism is a train wreck in slow motion. Remember there is help out there.

Condolences to her family, and the newly homeless.

one good thing came out of this, she will never do that again, get drunk and start fires!

3 previous attempts to torch her home she finally got her wish... self- cremation!!
Saves the temple a job I guess...

The homeless "victims" got to spend a night in the cemetery.... Knowing Thai superstition it must have been a sleepless night then, unless they took-it in turns with a "watchperson" keeping an eye open ??
