Commerce Ministry pushes Thailand for the ASEAN Community

BANGKOK, 7 May 2015 (NNT) – The Ministry of Commerce is now gearing up its strategy to push Thailand towards the ASEAN Community, with much anticipation on the benefits according to the designated plan, says an official.

The Deputy Director-General of the Department of Trade Negotiations (DTN) Arunee Poolkaew has revealed that the department has been pushing forward its strategic plan for pushing Thailand towards the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC).

She has said that about 80 percent of the plan has been completed, involving the amendment of laws and regulations in the related agencies, as well as creating the understanding about the AEC to all sectors to help increase the potential of Thai businesses and raise competitiveness.

The DTN Deputy Director-General has said that Thailand is set to receive various benefits from the integration of the AEC, especially consumers and entrepreneurs who will have more choices and opportunities to expand markets. Thailand's export value is also set to expand in the ASEAN era.

The AEC will also allow the free flow of labour which will help create more jobs and revenue, while the Free Trade Area agreement with other countries outside the AEC will help extend trade and investment of Thai entrepreneurs to even more countries.

The DTN Deputy Director-General has added that the integration of the AEC on 31 December 2015 will help strengthen the community, bringing in new challenges and opportunities. He repeated that the public be aware and knowledgeable about the AEC to prepare themselves for the upcoming changes.

I've asked a lot of Thai's over the last two years what they think about Asean. The response has been between bewilderment and downright ignorance. One bloke said to me ''Will this mean i will get more money ? ''

Is this 80% ready as the police saying there case is 80% complete then say when due need more time? And why do they need to push?

Labor - You won't see educated Thai going to other ASEAN countries for one simple reason. Little over a year ago a poll revealed that 90% of Thai Uni grads would never apply for a job in another country for one reason. They totally lack the required English skills it would take.

On the other hand you will see bi-lingual Filippina and Vietnamese coming here and landing the good jobs with the good companies, because they CAN speak English.

What's that leave for the Thai Uni grads? Well, 7-11 and Tesco might have the highest rate of basic employees with Bachelor's degrees. lol

I really can't see this being a two way street. I can't see Thailand allowing the more educated and higher people from other countries to waltz in and take jobs or compete with Thai businesses. There is already plenty of difficulty starting a business and I don't see the protectionism melting away.

I always get the feeling that Thailand expects to take all of the benefit as in ..."the AEC will help extend trade and investment of Thai entrepreneurs to even more countries."

Unfortunately Thailand followed by the PI will be the odd man out in this scenario. Also unfortunately it will be self induced. A real shame because the populace has the innate intelligence to actually succeed in such an environment but the cartel based economy here and the cultural imperatives that allow that situation will not allow this country to truly participate in this as agreed.

To add, I can't see Thailand relaxing its onerous import duties and tax on products/services from other countries.
