White Ants In My Soup

Featured Replies

Hi All and et al,

Recently had a meal on Suk and had this dish (cant remember the name) that was mostly rice or so I thought. On closer examination some of the 'rice' was these white ants (not termites). Definite head, thorax, and abdomen, antenna, eyes etc. The waitress said they live in trees. Distictive flavour quite sweet......I finished the dish it was quite good.

Anyone know what these ants are called?

Anyone else had similar experiences with Thai food?

thanks

Mr Table

Are you sure they were white ants?

It sounds more like red ant larvae and/or eggs... white in colour... considered to be a delicacy in Isaan.

egg ,larva ,pupa are white

Ive eaten yam mod daeng (spicy red ant salad) before and it was delicious !

They're nice in a garlic omelette too... :o

Bambina, Thats them!

They told me they live in nests in trees? similar to the Green Packet ants in Northern Australia? Do they 'grow' them commercially? I mean in orchards hahaha?

thanks for the pics they are great.

Any other unusual foods in BKK?

G

I've eaten ant larvae soup many times in Laos, it's delicious. The cooked larvae taste a bit like sauce bernaise.
