I can't apply for a tourist visa before arriving in Thailand because the country I'm in doesn't have a consulate. I will arrive to Chiang Mai, stay there for 30 days visa free and then try to extend for another 30 days at the CM immigration office. I want to then go to a nearby country and apply for a double entry tourist visa because i want to stay in Bangkok for 4-6 months after my 2 months in Chiang Mai.

I have an Australian passport and do not have a previous tourist visa in this passport (last tourist visa was 2013 in old passport). So, what are my chances that they will give me the double entry tourist visa? Which consulate is the best/easiest? I heard KL isn't good anymore.

Laos will be fine to apply for a tourist visa.

But can't you apply for a tourist visa in a neighbouring country of the country where you are now? Many allow applying by mail.

The problem with travelling without a visa is that the airline can refuse you boarding if you haven't got a ticket out of Thailand within 30 days of arrival.

I was in Budapest, Hungary. They don't accept visa applications unless you are Hungarian or have a residency permit for Hungary. I am now in Riga, Latvia and they don't even have a consulate. The closest consulate is in Helsinki, which is an expensive city and it takes 4 days to do the visa. My trip is in less than 3 weeks so I don't think I have time to mail an application anyway and sending my passport in the mail scares me.

Stick to your plan mate and do the double entry visa in Laos as suggested...... I have always flown in without a return ticket and fortunately never been asked for one and use the same system that you have planned for a long stay in Thailand.

I do not violently disagree with this, but you may need to convince the airline. I have taken the risk on a number of occasions, but some airlines are very reluctant to take you without visa or onward ticket. If you go this route and have problems, offer to indemnify the airline against any costs they could theoretically incur if you are refused entry. If you are of a nervous disposition, have a confirmed flight out of Thailand within 30 days of entry.

Depending on how you plan to fly to Thailand, it might also be possible to connect through a city with an honorary consulate that will issue tourist visas while you wait. The honorary consuls vary tremendously in what they are permitted/willing to do, but you could fire off a few emails and see if there is a convenient solution.

As said above, if you are worried about mail application in the country you are in prior to travelling, stick to your plan with the visa exemption entry with the 30 day extension.

To avoid any problems with airlines allowing you to travel, book online with one of the budget airlines based in Thailand for a one-way flight to a neighbouring country to coincide with the expiration of the 30 day exemption stamp.

This, IMHO, whether used or not, would be small money well spent............wink.png

I am traveling from Chiang Mai, where would be the closest/cheapest/easiest Thai consulate to visit to get double entry tourist visa after spending 30 days on arrival in Thailand already?

I think your best option would be Vientiane in PDR Laos, seeings that you are in Chiang Mai.

Yes, but Chiang Mai to Vientiane isn't exactly easy and I have been to Vientiane 2 times in the past. I would like to see somewhere new. I heard Savannakhet is nice, but I would have to backtrack through Bangkok.

It is as they say in Thailand "up to you"

Maybe a trip to Bali or Jakarta or KL would be of interest ?

No, cheap and quick is my preference. Can I do the visa in Burma? It is kind of near and I haven't been yet (apart from 2 border runs)?

I heard KL doesn't like issuing tourist visas now anyway. True?

Savannakhet is okay, very relaxed & no hassle/queues like at Vientiane, decent/cheap direct buses from bangkok or Pattaya.

Chiang Mai is possible on buses/mini vans but not direct so bit more time/hassle but still cheap.

You don't have to go through Bangkok to get to Savannakhet.

You could fly to Udon Thani from CM and take a bus from there to Mukdahan..

Or you could fly Kan Air to here in Ubon and take a bus or van to Mukdahan (2 to 3 hours.)

Only single entries in Yangon according to the most recent reports. Also the last I heard when you go to the embassy they give you a number that is for a later date.to do the application.
