PHUKET: -- After months of the Phuket Water Authority denying that the island is getting short of water, and despite recent rain, Phuket City Municipality yesterday (May 18) warned residents of the town that fresh water supplies are running short.

Deputy Mayor Thaworn Jirapattanasopon announced the looming shortage and urged city dwellers to use water sparingly.

Rainfall so far has been random and not enough has been collected to continue supplying the whole city, he said.

From now until the rainy season sets in, water pressure will be reduced from 10am to 5pm and from 10pm to 5am, he said, adding that some areas higher up will eperience low pressure or no supply at all during those period.

He urged residents to store water in buckets or other containers so that they have some water when the taps run dry.

Residents should also check water pipes in their area and, if they find any broken or leaking pipes, they should report them immediately. They can call 076-211-130 or 099-487-4038 at any time of day or night.

The shortages are limited to households only within the city limits, “because our water sources are insufficient,” a municipal official told The Phuket News.

Thamdongrak Kumphet, Chief of the Phuket Provincial Water Department, which supplies most of the rest of the island, said, “We do not have to low pressure.” Water supplies are adequate, he said.

The Western Thailand Meteorological Department told The Phuket News that rain is unlikely this week but is expected from May 24 onwards as the annual southwest monsoon begins to grow in power.

Despite overwhelming the the sewage and water systems, the new construction continues at a furious pace. Add to that the incredible over supply of existing units for sale with a dead real estate market. It's insanity.

Who is going to stop it? Not the government, they're invested in keeping the construction going.

You would think market forces would dampen the continued expansion, but it just keeps expanding.

They're should be a construction moratorium till they can address the infrastructure issues...but TIT.

The reason for the oversupply of condos in Phuket and in Bangkok is that construction projects are a time-honored way to launder ill-gotten gains - it has nothing to do with actual demand for places to live.

If no one is living in all these empty condos, then, no extra water is being used.

I think what the poster was trying to convey was that it would appear that at no time whatsoever have the developers and or local authorities ever considered the infrastructure that is needed to ensure places like Patong, for instance, operate effectively.

Despite roadworks and promises over the years, massive flooding still occurs on many streets, black water remains in the klongs, blocked drains with unbelievable smells emanating from them are many fold, and of course there are water shortages, however the building still continues and quite where or how the run-off or sewage is going to be dealt with if the over 900 apartments are ever built on "The Park" on Nanai Road, god only knows!!

I think we are all aware that the infrastructure is well behind the actual development.

The trouble is, is that it is seen by developers as not necessary and just eats into their profits.

They know that by the time problems appear, they will be long gone.

The answer is as another poster has stated that by the time the problem arrives the developers and the money will be long gone. Your on your own. Here in Chiang Mai every time I flush the toilet I say a small prayer as the crap swirls around and disappears. I also say a prayer when I turn the tap on or hit the light switch.
