Hi all,

My problem is that I am in rented accomodation in Chiang Mai, however it is in my wifes name. How do I get a residency certificate from the new office to renew a 5 year driving licence?

Go to the Immigration Office and register your residence with your marriage certificate and your wife's rental agreement in hand. I doubt that you will be hassled. You will get a receipt, and you should ask for a copy of the registration itself. Perhaps this is out of date, but the registration office for this purpose --- to be done, not every 90 days, but every time you move --- is located in the building behind the copy shop.

A simpler plan, perhaps, might just be to get a letter from your wife, your concierge! It would be interesting to know if that would work! You would attach copies of the marriage certificate and rental agreement.

Give it a go!

Is that really necessary? He wants a residence certificate, he did not ask how to register his residence which in his landlord's responsibility, not his.

When I have gotten residence certificates from Immigration, I just filled out their form and have never had to provide any other documents. Brief friendly chat and it is finished.

Now that they take 500b for the 'next day' issue on a 'free' service.. They dont seem to care about it like they did when it was really a free service.. go figure..

Someone I know got one a couple of months back with nothing more than a 30 day stamp and a photocopy of a tabien baan, no landlord ID, no signature, no contract..

I think now its 500b and come get it tomorrow.

Complete application and take copies of passport main page and visa page and any 'extensions' etc (and originals) - take wife and a copy of lease (front 1-2 pages) as well as original.

Sit down and have a chat as the previous post said - any problems they will let you know what to do. Dont forget to take the money/payment/gift.

My apologies. I may have confused people a bit. There are two forms involved and two Chiang Mai offices. Dante has alluded to both in a comment below. I do agree that the visit for the house-master form (See below) is quite quick and easy (I had a nce chat, too, with the officer on duty) but I was asked for specific proof of residence.

The first is for Department of Land Transportation purposes (e.g., driver's license, transfer of vehicle ownership). It is called an APPLICATION FORM FOR RESIDENCE CERTIFICATE IN THAILAND. One is attached. It does not have a number that I know of, but can be Googled and downloaded. It is issued currently by the Immigration Office located near Promenada. (See also BB24's comment above.)

The second is a responsibility of a "house-master." It is a requirement for all aliens for reporting their residence. If you move, the new house-master must file one. It has a snappy title. It is called a NOTIFICATION FROM FOR HOUSE-MASTER, OWNER OR THE POSSESSOR OF THE RESIDENCE WHERE ALIEN HAS STAYED. One is attached. It is Form TM30. It can be Googled and downloaded. In a rental situation, ultimately the lessor must provide proof. I suspect that,in OP's situation, his wife's contract will probably suffice, but I am not certain. It is issued by the office to the rear of the Immigration compound on the Airport Road. This is the law, but it is loosely enforced (except for hotels, I suppose).

In OP's case (and in the case of many others), I have suggested that the house-master report (which is not a big hassle, really, once done) can be used thereafter to get the certificate for the Land Transportation transactions.

Basically, you need proof of residence and proof of relationship. A copy of the house-master form (The receipt should include handwritten alien names) ought to do the trick for the residence certificate (driver's license/vehicle transaction), and you are straight with everyone.

The householder report is not the 90-day report. For that, of course, one goes a different route: visit to the Airport Road office, the post office or to bed crying in frustration in your inability to do the report on line!

Congratulatios, your first post provided misinformation and your second topped it with confusion and conjecture. Your writing "ought to do the trick" is what, a guess on your part? It is certainly not the usual wording to describe actual experience or specific wording of a requirement.

What the OP needs is simple to obtain as LivinLOS has stated. It rarely if ever requires all the jumping through hoops you have described.

Be aware that at least 2 immigration offices (Khon Kaen and Kap Choeng) have stopped issuing Residence Certificates.

It could be coming to you soon.

Like I said earlier.. that stream of 500b payments kind of makes them easier to get.. I dont think they will want to shut that little gravy train down any time soon.

Nothing is carved in stone, that's for sure. I would consider bringing the wife, with the lease, and a few bills with your name for extra measure. You have to declare the purpose for the LOR, so the requirements may vary by purpose, just like they vary by the wind direction. I got a free one in January, used the Promenada free shuttle.

Discommodes the wife, but that'll work!

Hmmmm! Do you have a close fraternal relationship (but another IP address if that is the right term ) to someone else who posts on this thread as many times historically and so often in the same tone? Just asking.....
