NRC likely to approve of new charter if their proposals are fulfilled

BANGKOK, 22 May 2015 (NNT) - The Chairman of the National Reform Council (NRC) said he believes the NRC will approve of the new constitution, provided that the charter drafters adhere to amendment requests.

NRC Chairman Thienchay Kirananda said the reform body is making progress in compiling its consensus on various issues.

Regarding the decision by the Cabinet and the National Council for Peace and Order to call for a public referendum on the new charter, Mr Thienchay said the NRC agrees that the public must be given ample time to study the document and that extensive channels be established to educate the public.

Furthermore, the NRC has agreed that the referendum must be held to approve the new charter as a whole, instead of on specific provisions.

NRC Chairman said that judging by the growing consensus within the reform body on many issues, he is confident that the NRC will vote to approve of the new constitution, provided that the charter drafters make revisions according to the council's requests.

I don't believe that the NCPO agreed to hold a referendum - only to amend the Interim Charter to provide it as an option.

Presenting the draft as a single document for public approval is the only reasonable way for a vote instead of votes on every article. But I doubt the NRC and CDC can repair the charter to the extent that it will be accepted by a majority of the voters, and more importantly, by the NCPO.
