We hired a night security guard for our moo-ban. He turned up 1st night with his own pillow/blanket. When it was pointed out that he was expected to stay awake, he quit! Most Thais in my experience are lazy. They want the money but will avoid the work.

You come across as a pompous, Thai bashing, self righteous twerp with a superiority complex.

Would you work 8 hours labour per day, having to live on the land, earning $65 per week for a foreigner who has no official jurisdiction over his employees or the said land whatsoever? That in my mind almost amounts to slave labour expecting the natives to be completely committed to the Massa farang big boss man and his Thai wife.

Gone are the days of the subservient Thai workers willing to give their all for a pittance and expected to be grateful for it. Over the years the working conditions and economy have substantially improved in Thailand, most can now stick two fingers up to what the OP is offering, as I would do in that situation.

I am certain that the OP`s set up will be short lived as the authorities are no longer turning a blind eye to these practices and hopefully those with such attitudes of inferiority as yourself and the OP towards the Thais, considering them all incompetent and lazy, which is an extreme form of racism, will never prosper here.

Now are you sure thats it?

all the posters on here saying that 18,000 is not enough but as the post starter has said many times, they have a house,, food,, use of motorcycle,, etc, one could work in a factory for 26 days a month and would certainly not have a house thrown in nor a motorbike. or free food. for 9000 baht.i think the op is being very reasonable, as it not in bangkok for christ sake.

Oh, according to you the salary is not related to the work a Thai has to do but depends on if his boss is Thai or Foreign.

Yes the house is probably the problem. Most people aren't going to want to live in shouting distance of their boss especially a foreigner.

"etc, one could work in a factory for 26 days a month and would certainly not have a house thrown in nor a motorbike. or free food. for 9000 baht.i think the op is being very reasonable"

Actually most factory line workers are earning more than that now. Many offer good benefits, they do offer free transportation, and meals or at least a very inexpensive canteen.

Working in an airconditioned factory has a lot more prestige than working labor in a field for some uppity whitey and his "Thai Wife".

You mean in a factory where they are not allowed to sit down even 5 minutes if they feel so, and where the foreman says how many pieces wil have to be produced at the end of the day.

In a factory where they are not allowed to start 5 minutes late or stop 5 minutes early.

What are you on about we dont have a fish business in fact we dont have any business we grow some pineapples on the land locals take care of the crop our staff dont deal with them, she doesnt even work down here, sometimes i begin to wonder what some members can dream up.

Which is why we provide them with as much entertainment a s possible tv internet etc free fuel they can go out on the motorbike all day to the sea or wherever, obviously after i have beaten them and they have licked my boots clean...................according to some

ay from family, friends or a community of their peers. They won't stay long in a job if they do not have this; they need to be 'happy' and this usually means working as part of a group they can socialise with after hours too. He can only hope that luck will send the right couple along one day.

You're still thinking as a Westerner. The most likely candidates would be local relatives and even they won't be much different or stay very long. Without the owners living on it, the idea of buying a piece of land in the boondocks was probably flawed.

They ask for these things when they come, they understand the job + a fair few are from Burma so are far from the family already, many call home daily and locally ie 1km away are more Burmese that they know of if they want some company.

I live on the land wife visits every 2 weeks or so.

Their is the problem. You got yourself setup in some kind of business, let me guess you invested in it because the Mrs told you it is easy money and in the beginning I guess she was on site. Never ever setup a business with you and the wife away.

You surely didn't do your homework from the beginning and now things is going down the toilet and lets blame the cheap labor.

I have been in Thailand for almost 26 years and A) I don't invest in some kind of fish farm or setting up some kind of farming business as I am not a farmer.

My Mrs too wants a fish pond and I actually don't mind as I know it makes money, so I told her to write a simple business plan and an Excel Sheet of monthly expenses, wages, etc.

I have not got the list yet back from her and it is already 9 months but her latest plans of her is going to make a degree in Hospitality Management so I feel this has a better chance to contribute at her future, even if it cost 1.6 million Baht over the next 4 years (Dusit Thani College and Le Courdon Bleu for a Diploma in French cuisine).

It would be interested to know why your Mrs abounded her fish pond business in the country side. If your Mrs can't handle the locals, shut it down and move on with your life.

To be honest you are so far off track its unbelievable.

Let me set you straight, we grow pineapples on the land to keep it tidy, I like tidy but my main "hobby" is growing palm trees, nope not for sale for something i call "pleasure"

Fish are also for pleasure in fact we give them away to a few neighbours and the staff can have some

In time all pineapples will probably go as i plant more and more trees.

Hell my Wife doesnt even live with me down here.

Never mind keep up the as you say "guess" work

fish is not sdo easy to be really a business,

or your pool will produce every day for the market 50 to 100 kgs !

and you be there with the fish 7 am !

Will your missus manage this ??

even she can't handle a gardener as employee ??

Have you been in India or Nepal on a monkey temple ?

hundreds of them there are societed -

and than they are happy,

We live in a modern world where low level manual work just isn't appealing.

The only people prepared to do it are the land owners and the desperate, and maybe the slightly simple.

People just aren't that desperate these days, I see no solution to your problem.

I suppose you could marry a foreigner, convince them it is their land, and get them to work for nothing until they drop ....... no, wait ........

What would you classify Burmese boat people and another 3 billion people?

There are people in this country that are willing to take it up the arse for $20.

$65 a week is anything but slave labor in Isaan.

BJ,

Somehow do you think foreigners should pay Thais more than the market rate b/c they come from industrial countries? You also contradict yourself saying economic times have improved but in reality data supports the economic disparity gap in LOS is widening. Then you talk about slave conditions disappearing yet isn't it still a society paying a 300B a day minimum wage amounting to under $300 a month. A huge % of Thais work for minimum wage or close to it. Most people in LOS are basically poor or just surviving from pay day to pay day. As to authorities monitoring labor, health and safety, working conditions, etc that is just wishful thinking on your part. Thai gov does a very poor job in these areas. Fishing, construction, farming transportation educational industries? It's sad when the international community forces the Thai gov to come into compliance via bans, sanctions two tier lists, etc. In the 15 years I have lived here, very little significant progress if any in H&S, labor, working conditions etc. Good at extending a holiday into five days though...I wonder if the workers get time and a half or double time...gigglem.gif

Lots of interesting comment here. My guess is that while Kannot thinks he's offering good wages and benefits for a decent job (and from a Western perspective he is), for the type of people who are likely to apply and try it out, it's not. It's a boring job with little satisfaction. Money and comfortable living is not enough. Most SE Asians are not used to being isolated, away from family, friends or a community of their peers. They won't stay long in a job if they do not have this; they need to be 'happy' and this usually means working as part of a group they can socialise with after hours too. He can only hope that luck will send the right couple along one day.

Hmmmmmmmm most advice is never use family in Thailand, thankfully her ( Wife's) parents are both dead and the rest 500 miles away. Her Father was a piece of crap anyway, her words not mine i never met him.

They ask for these things when they come, they understand the job + a fair few are from Burma so are far from the family already, many call home daily and locally ie 1km away are more Burmese that they know of if they want some company.

Lucky both parents are dead

Nice one.hmm and you wonder why they dont want a bar of you!

I highly doubt that he shares the view that Thai people are inherently lazy.

171 posts on this...good debate going on.....

Kannot....why not , if you cant get workers, offer this in an ad in a Western newspaper...There are thousands of Pensioners around that are starving and would jump at the opportunity...Without the salary....even if you only get them for 90 days at a time...They would appreciate the chance to eat and enjoy freedom in your surroundings.....not cooped up in a room eating tinned dog food to survive....

I would guess you would be overwhelmed with applicants.

Sure they would need a work permit...blah blah...But they would do more in 3 months, than the ones you tried, would do in 12 months......

You will find a way eventually....

Had similiar experience. We got the neighbours to clean some land and paid them 500 baht for a days work (2 yrs ago) They did ok job but did have to send them back to finish the job. Tried to do same thing about a month later. They were not interested. Resorted to spraying it and digging it myself. Luckily gf brother now lives on the land and he gets it clean ( after several requests from me to gf. Hard work seems to be something they try hard to avoid yet I have the opposit experience with my builders..wonderful hard workers.

How many freakin assumptions can you make that are SO wrong it makes you look ridiculous

let me Guess in your beady eyes I have a massive farang mansion with great big <deleted> off stainless gates and 3-4 cars all new Mercedes??

reality check

HOUSE 50m2 1 bedroom 1 living room 1 kitchen 1 bathroom smaller than most 1 bed condos, no gates no Mercedes no tv in house no furniture in house House number 2 built as MAIDS house but due to them being unable to keep it clean is now empty, size 46m2 includes a tool store room ie for tools for working on the land.

Explain how this house then "magically" becomes Farang House?????

That's the entire houses on the land total less than 100m2

Land is 15 rai

I know Ill put a big sign out front "no farang live here"tongue.png

The only way they will know is speaking to the neighbours

Perhaps you should just do it yourself, or get family members to chip in. Would you do that job for 9k a month (18k for 2 people)? Would you be enthusiastic?

I mean, not exactly going to create a better like is it? Can't save for a pension, can't get private health care, can't send the kids to a private school, can't eat out at restaurants, go to the cinema, bowling, can't go on a family holiday, can't pay a monthly payment on a car.

The wage might be higher than what is normally paid for this job, but it still isn't a fair wage and represents everything that is wrong with this country and indeed so many others.

It appears you have never employed staff in Thailand from this answer and have no idea of salaries, the salary is better than what anyone else is paying they could easily save well over half of that and most likely all of it, would you like to see their house? this was there house BEFORE they all decided they simply could not ne bothered to take care of it, second picture is their house now which requires NO cleaning on their part as they seemed unable to keep it clean. Free motorbike with Free fuel also so the 18k incudes , rice, electric, water, tv, fish, any vegetables on the land inc mango papaya banana lemon grass and a few others, they don't have any travel expenses or accommodation expenses or services bills.

Oh yeah I built t his staff house alone no help at all, all the work on the land I have also done at sometime so I know how hard/easy the job is,,,,,,,,,its EASY

I have a lot of experience with salaries in Thailand. I'm not saying the salary isn't good in terms of comparative market rates. That wasn't the point I was making. I'm just not comfortable with paying someone a salary that wouldn't afford them even a fraction of the life I can with my family.

And in answer to the other poster who said So you think an unqualified labourer working on the land should receive a salary that will allow them to send their children to private school?

I believe everyone should have access to the same level of education, and if you've ever been near rural Thailand you should have worked out by now that education is deliberately underfunded by central government in order to keep an endless line of slaves queuing up to work in the "engine room" of Thailand. You need people on the bottom to enable people to live affluently on the top.

So I take it that you pay your maid or any other labor you use 30K a month. Right?

Probably pays them a lot more than that as that wouldn't really be enough for them to send their children to private school, pay for the new car and still have some left over for bowling and the cinema.

Given a decent location, this one here probably makes as much before noon as a minimum wage worker makes in 12 hours.

picfornewsletterthailandbangkok2008250.j

Works when she wants, where she wants, and has infinite growth potential if she buys a second (or tenth) stand and hires someone at, say, 9,000 per month to run it for her.

Or, she can take a job for 9,000 a month with no growth potential, inflexible hours, hard labor and a few perks.

I don't blame them for not working for "competitive" wages if they can make almost as much, or even more selling fruit, or fish, or fried chicken, or pencils...

No, I don't blame them for refusing the job if they can make more doing something else but that's not what the opening post was about. The people he hired obviously didn't have other sources of income or they wouldn't have accepted the job in the first place.

Live for a year..............you might be a little out of touch with the current situation.

Anyway, my guess is that they resent farangs that come here and circumvent laws and build a cushy life on the backs of poor thais.

They probably also resent being offered the absolute minimum, by the rich farang who loves to lord it over them and order them around all day.

Think about it, if say; a rich Indian came to your country and did that.

L

Wanted you to live and work on the property24/7, no identity or life of your own, for absolute minimum wage

Most would tell him to f#ck off and then dob him in to immigration for good measure id guess
