How many times do we have to tell you to keep the money offshore. The system is rigged against you here in every way. Like in a casino the longer you play you will see the odds in house favor over time.

Some people just dont get it or are too stubborn to learn from the mistakes of others!

Some of us do have to keep at least THB 800,000 in an account here for Immigration reasons, unfortunately. But after having had the pleasure of dealing with some Thai banks to try and get a better rate (i.e.move the funds from BBL to another bank, on a retirement visa), I swore to myself to only keep the absolute minimum in my account from now on, dont want to deal with the hassles of having to suck up to a bank manager and convincing him to accept a substantial cash deposit...

The majority of expats have absolutely no problems with the banks.

Certainly compared to the pi55 poor arrogant service I have had from UK banks, dealing with Asian banks is an absolute pleasure. And the girls are nice to look at too.

Just try walking into a UK bank with 16,000 Quid in cash.......

As a farang, what would know about discrimination in the UK or any other western country?

What? Translation please.

You can tell me as many times as you like.

I will continue to live my own life free of the nervous nellies, with my Thai wife in Thailand and elsewhere as I see fit..

I lost a damn site more in the west than I ever will in Thailand.

My money and I will do what I damn well like with it.

Did you ever see a tow bar on the back of a hearse?

Stop counting the dollars and start smelling the roses.

I am curious if you will still be saying that down the line if your deal goes South......

Nothing wrong with insurance!

Insurance against what?

Poor personal decisions?

Just wear the loss.

We all die someday.

Want to be the richest corpse in the graveyard?

Get to be 95 and brag "I told you so"?

No doubt your Mum or Dad or some other wise person told you money wasn't everything ...and when you have had a life changing event....you will reflect on this.

No matter where one invests, when he/she chooses a bank for a fixed rate guaranteed investment he/she is saying that safety is more important than yield. If you want a higher return, you must be prepared for more risk - whether that happens to be in the east or the west.

That said, if I had your experience I would vote with my feet and look for somewhere else to invest my money.

Since when is double pricing considered racism.

They charge you more, because you're more well off compared to an average thai, they get the idea that you can pay more.

Stop calling everything racism.

You know what racism is? When you can't board first class even though you're willing to pay for it E.G What happened to mahatma gandhi.

I think experiences such as these are for the maladjusted. Ex-pats or locals. Ex-pats and locals. People not thinking about money and or sex all the time, will not have many of the experiences shared here on TV. They won't need them. They're normal, mature , comfortable with themselves, adults. All shapes. sizes, colors and countries. Moving nicely through life.

A real weird lot of posters on this forum who continually bash the Thais ,The elite, the rich, the governmenmt and other posters of this forum. Maladusted and sad beings. Thank god i never meet them. I must live in a different world to them. I never have any such problems as many farangs seem to have whilst living here. I have been cheated by Farangs, but no Thais.

Who the <deleted> would want to invest funds at 2 or (God forbid) 2,4 percent anyway - forget the alleged racism, think about the rational of the investment. You couldn't convince me to fart in bed for a 2 or 2.4% return.

As to buying a condo, get your Missus to buy it at the Thai price of 1.88M.

having wife buy it would be counter intuitive as it would then not fall into the 49% foreign quota. thus narrowing the market for a resale

which may also explain the difference in cost

In a nutshell this one of the classic house/land scams...Happens in most Thai villages always to farangs..In my former village 4 farang owners have lost their home to Thais in this way...

BTW u not only loose you home but you also loose additional millions of BHT on your useless court case and lawyers fees.

Thais will get some copy of your home documents ,example your thai wife ,your thai maid or your fake thai tenant. Then they fake your signature and go to the land office..they stop your lease or kick u off as the director from ur company that controls the home..then they go to a mafia connected thai loan shark who is in on the scam..he will give a loan to the first scammer..The loan gets not repaid,so now the loan shark owns the house...The farang now gets kicked out by the loan shark from his own house...u then go to court 2-3 times 2-3 years and u loose always in court...

Land offices can protect foreigners by making it mandatory for all persons involved in any transaction at land the office to appear in person,to avoid fake documents and signatures..But they not care i guess..

Judge will take side with the loan shark, land office saying no body was aware that thai home owners faked every document...

Secondly, I have my US military retirement coming here direct deposit because it is a good conversion rate (compared to the rest)

You've been mislead. Your Direct Deposit of your military pension to Bangkok Bank incurs the same fees ("This method employs the same fee structure as Bangkok Bank’s direct deposit service." http://www.jusmagthai.com/rao.html#DDS ) -- and gets the TT buying rate -- as if you direct deposited to a US bank account, then did an ACH transfer through Bangkok Bank NY. Such a transfer would go to an ordinary Bangkok Bank savings account -- ordinary in the sense that such an account could be accessed via an ATM card, internet banking -- and by someone other than yourself. Direct Deposit, however, has an account with no ATM card, no internet banking access, and requires an in-person visit to collect the money. Quite inconvenient when you're traveling -- or in a coma.

As retired military, it's easy enough to set up an account with USAA, have your pension deposited there, then do a free (of USAA fees) ACH transfer of your pension -- with the option to send only the amount you need, or quickly shut off the flow entirely -- if you're squeamish about the Thai banking system.

Yes, the Direct Deposit system means you'll get your pension a few days earlier than ACHing from your US account. But, if you're living so hand-to-mouth that you can't wait a few days, then you've definitely got higher priorities to worry about.

On a positive note, compared to other Asian countries I stayed before, Thailand is quite open minded when it comes to foreigners.

Absolutely true. But a forum like this is not the place to come for a realistic perspective on these things.

Short answer: don't like the rules here (or can't figure out ways around them, which there always are), perhaps you'd be happier elsewhere.

There is only one set of rules here in Thailand, the Thai set of rules,if you think you can get around the rules in Thailand,in your favour then you have a lot to learn!

For 10 years I have been sharing my time between Vietnam and Thailand and pay modest rent on both Hanoi and Bangkok. I enjoy the best of both worlds which are very different as are the people. When I initially moved to Hanoi I invested US$50k in a yearly term deposit account @14%. That has now dropped to about 8%. No trouble at all opening a bank account in Vietnam unlike Bangkok where I tried bank after bank only to be knocked back on some specious grounds. Finally after advice from an expat friend I managed to open a savings account with Bangkok Bank but use this only for funds transfers because of the low interest rate. I have never had any problems with my Vietnamese investment account and they have always paid the yearly interest on time and without fuss. This is for information only and I am not giving advice. My life's experience has taught me that buying property with my own money but with someone else's name on the title is a mugs game.

Yep. Pattaya is very much "Us and Them"

Thai Culture and Western Cultures are so far apart. And will drift further apart with time.

I am inclined to think the cultural differences will narrow. but the racism will increase.

I get the impression I am resented in some sectors here, particularly when I sense I am being discriminated against and walk away.

Seems its your function here to defend unfair thai system for us..

Anyway u wrong...There is not one set of rules but 2 sets of rules one for Thais and one for Foreigner citizens..The rules/laws we have received from Thailand are really very poorly and offer us no protection what so ever...

That is why so many farangs here have lost items like houses land businesses and court cases all to thais.......

wowfactor,

you keep going on about these rules being unfair,

right you know these rules are unfair,

so why would you want to come and live here? you know the rules are there, you know they arnt going to change,

so why do you keep going on and on about it?

these are the rules, they are in place, you are not going to get them changed on some thai forum,

so in the end if it dosnt suit you, then dont come and live here, SIMPLE,

Every day, I wake up and make the decision to not leave. Just knowing that I have a choice (and nobody is forcing me to stay) takes some of the sting out of any perceived unfairness.

Being over 21 with a non-Thai passport, I'm a volunteer, not a victim.

Although I posted on the Pattaya Forum......as it happens I do not live in Pattaya,

I am not a person who drinks alcahol, never goes to bars and am definitely not a "sex tourist"......just an ordinary "respectable" person with a "happy" home life.....who treats others how "they" would wish to be treated.

I did not say that I was unhappy living here in Thailand, merely pointed out the double standards which exist here...

If you believe this is acceptable.......I don't........

Thailand has a lot of things going for it (that is why I live here).........but it is my belief that it cannot move forward with this kind of "mindset".......hopefully this will change.......but I doubt that I can hold my breath that long

As for the posted opinion......Thais are poorer than outsiders........many of them have become much better off because we have come here.......

In a free enterprise system and rampant profiteering system......you should not be surprised at all that they try to and or often successfully do make all the more money and profit from foreigners.

If you were to sit down with them and ask them why they charge more for foreigners they may ( lets say they did ) explain their logic behind the reasons as to why they think foreigners ( maybe white skinned foreigners more so than others ) should pay more or get less of what is paid for ...as compared to Thai citizens.

In the end it is up to you to decide if you want to buy their product or services regardless of the double pricing system as they are not going to change their mentality and attitude...which they believe is very clever and applauded by all the other Thais who think they are also so very clever.

On the other hand....I sell product to Thai people ( sometimes ) while I have no remorse at all when I sell a Thai person my product for higher price than I would say a foreigner.....but I do not do that deliberately because they are Thai ........rather I sell it to them at the price they offer.

If they offer more than I could actually sell it to them for, then that is OK for me that they paid more than others.

Cheers
