Vogele123 Posted June 11, 2015 Posted June 11, 2015 Anyone around CM, go take a look at the sun! There are some amazing views up there.
Vogele123 Posted June 11, 2015 Author Posted June 11, 2015 I managed to get a few shots before it disappeared Never seen anything like it!
Tywais Posted June 11, 2015 Posted June 11, 2015 Nice catch with the photos. That is a solar halo and believe that specific type is a 22° Circular Halo. Earthsky Atoptics
Vogele123 Posted June 11, 2015 Author Posted June 11, 2015 Nice catch with the photos. That is a solar halo and believe that specific type is a 22° Circular Halo. Earthsky Atoptics Cheers! I had no idea what it was and had never seen anything like it before. Solar Halo, well you learn something new everyday. Thanks for that.

Shurup Posted June 11, 2015 Posted June 11, 2015 Have seen one some years ago in Northern Canada or Alaska, don't remember where I was at the time.
siam2007 Posted June 11, 2015 Posted June 11, 2015 Great you can see the sun again in CM after the usual several months of haze. If not for the Chinese mainlander hordes, I would even consider to visit again ;-)
NeverSure Posted June 11, 2015 Posted June 11, 2015 Nice photos, guys. Great instinct and technique on the exposures.
doublephil Posted June 11, 2015 Posted June 11, 2015 Solar halos are not caused by pollution - they are caused by very thin clouds made of ice crystals in the upper atmosphere
Saan Posted June 11, 2015 Posted June 11, 2015 Nice catch with the photos. That is a solar halo and believe that specific type is a 22° Circular Halo. Earthsky Atoptics Spoilsport. I thought it was something mystical.
snowflake Posted June 11, 2015 Posted June 11, 2015 First time I saw that was on a motorbike ride with a mate in Thailand, we were almost at the ferry to Songkhla... Amazing view...
phazey Posted June 11, 2015 Posted June 11, 2015 "Earthlings, we come in peace." Is there any intelligent life on Earth? - Yes, but we're only visiting....
shaurene Posted June 11, 2015 Posted June 11, 2015 You can see these halo's around the sun or the moon it happens due to moisture and depending how big the rings are will tell you how long before rain will come.
Vogele123 Posted June 11, 2015 Author Posted June 11, 2015 I used a GoPro camera on standard HD settings, everything set to automatic, no clever fiddling with exposure or any of that malarkey. Managed to pull a nice still from the video I shot, check out the 6 intersecting arcs to the right of the actual halo - they were as clear as aircraft jet trails, they made perfect ellipses for miles across the sky. Amazing site. (apparently my son reckons these are pretty common here????)
Tarteso Posted June 11, 2015 Posted June 11, 2015 Is a Refractive phenomenon by ice crystals suspended in the troposphere. .
LennyW Posted June 12, 2015 Posted June 12, 2015 Quite common to see in Thailand around this time of year, quite often the sign of an impending storm.
TG911 Posted June 12, 2015 Posted June 12, 2015 Beautiful Lunar Circles. They look amazing. In February I saw this one on Koh Lipe during daytime, but around the Sun! That was a new one to me.
Beetlejuice Posted June 12, 2015 Posted June 12, 2015 Solar halos are not caused by pollution - they are caused by very thin clouds made of ice crystals in the upper atmosphere Yes, it`s similar to a lunar corona. Seeing something like this is extremely rare, I have never been lucky enough to have witness such an event. Brilliant photos that I think are worth sending to a newspaper or magazine that I am should will be interested. Congratulations and well done for catching this amazing event on camera.
