Applying for Non B Visa on Penang in person

Hello everyone! This is my first time to apply a Multiple Entry Non B Visa in Penang, Malaysia and will not do with visa runs. Are there any experienced people here that could give some tips or complete steps on everything I need to do in Penang? Like how could I get to Thai Embassy? What are all processes for the Visa? Multiple entry non b visa fee? Do I need to stay for some days in Penang? Etc.

Please help me on everything I need to do and I need to know as I don't have much extra money to make mistakes in this adventure. By the way, my documents are complete for a Multiple Entry Non B Visa. Thank you in advance!

1. How much is the fee for Multiple Entry Non B Visa?

2. Do they accept Thai Baht or only Malaysian Ringgit?

3. I will hand my passport, application and documents between 9-12am to the Thai consulate, when can I get my passport back after granting me the visa?
4. I'm planning to take the boat from Butterworth to Penang. Where in Penang is the best place or area to stay and wander around while waiting for my passport that is near and has an easy access to Thai embassy?

3. Apply 09:00 -11:30 am. Mon -Friday, plus collect next 14:00 - 16:00 p.m. both excluding Thai Malaysian Public Holidays.

4. Stay in George Town area, plenty of accommodation and good restaurants, Thai consulate is in the middle of suburban nowhere - plan to get a taxi to/from, or be prepared for public transport adventures/long walks.

I've never been to Penang for a visa run but I think I'm going to take a trip to Malaysia so I mine as well do it right around the expiry date.  I know the normal documents I need for a 3 month Non-B which is all I can get because I have a son but I'm not married or not even together with his mother anymore.  

 

Do I need to have an outgoing ticket or show money in the bank for this?

What I'd like to know is what is the benefit of getting a Non Immigrant Visa over Multiple Entry Tourist Visa? you still have to leave every 90 days.  Is the difference that with a Non Imm you can extend for 1 year so you don't have to do border runs?

If you qualify for a Non-Imm 1 Year ME Visa, it can - in many cases - be easier to get than a ME Tourist Visa - in terms of paperwork AND not having to go to your passport/residence country to get an ME Tourist Visa.  This thread is about a B-Visa, and each type of Non-Imm has its own requirements, which vary by the consulate at which one applies for it.

To be able to apply for a 1-year "extension of stay" for a Non-B or any extension to a Non-ED, one must start with a visa from a consulate abroad.  There is a "conversion to Non-Imm" process possible for "Non-O" types - though the difficulty of the conversion process varies by immigration office - nearly impossible at some, and not too-difficult at others.  Always best if one can start with a Non-Imm visa.  But, again, this thread is about a Non-B (not Non-O), and all cases I am aware of involve going to a consulate abroad to start the process (as with a Non-ED), followed by extensions in-country as the next step.

 

An additional benefit of a Non-Imm type visa, is that even the more strict points of entry tend not to impose an interrogation experience and possibly reject-entry, as they are more likely do with longer-stayers on any type of Tourist visas - even including MEs in rare cases (be sure to have 20K Baht worth of cash or travelers checks on entry).  Non-EDs are an exception to this rule, and those entering on these may receive the same or worse scrutiny than those on Tourist types.

 

A benefit an ME "Visa" obtained at a consulate abroad, vs an "extension of stay" obtained in-country, is not having to deal with your local immigration office at all, and being able to use the visa until expiry even if the reason for obtaining it ceases to exist (loss of job, divorce, etc).  When on an extension of stay, if the reason for the extension terminates, your permit-of-stay terminates the same day.
