New passport and requirements at local Immigration?

Featured Replies

This is just me relaying what happened today and for your information as it was a bit of shock to me.

I have a retirement visa, had it for about 3 years, so well known in the local office, last year the girl behind the desk pointed out I needed soon a new passport as the pages were running out, this year was that year.

I returned to the UK and have just returned with my new 10 year jumbo passport, no problems at Heathrow or Bangkok but when I went to report I was back and expected just to be given a 90 day extension, come back in september, I was told that I needed to get a letter from the British Embassy in Bangkok verifying I was a British citizen! They even showed me a letter confirming that a certain mr "X" was indeed a British Citizen, so much for privacy!

I told them I got a British passport from the UK Government because I am British, they are satisfied I am the full ticket so I dont see what the problem is, with this my old papers and stampers were transferred into the new passport.

Now I dont know if this is what usually happens, first time for me, maybe it is a requirement, but i dont know anyone in the Embassy and I am sure they would not be able to spot a fake passport so how can they do any more vouching for me with the information in front of them that the UK border agency? Remember its scanned at the airport as well and I am not sure if the Embassy have scanners.

It just looks like either it just another layer of beaurocracy at local level or the UK Embassy have found another revenue scheme.

It is just a letter asking immigration to transfer your stamps. You can request it by email to the embassy and they will EMS it back to you. Just include details of your old and new passport in the email. There is no charge for the letter.

Contact info for the consular section can be found here. https://www.gov.uk/government/world/organisations/british-embassy-bangkok#our-services

when you get back with a new passport is there a time limit they want you to go to immigration to transfer the stamps?

No time limit, but don't wait too long.

Once I lived very far away so it took more than one month before I had time to make the journey to immigration. That was accepted without any comment.
