PHUKET: -- Police are investigating to confirm whether or not an Australian man found dead in a Patong hotel room last night (June 18) died of natural causes.

Officers were called to Nicky’s Handlebar Hotel on 200 Pi Rath-U-Thit Rd at 8pm to find the body of the 65-year-old man lying on the bed in his room.

The man was identified by his passport, but his name is being withheld until it has been confirmed that his family has been notified.

Medical staff at the scene estimated that the man died between 12 and 24 hours before his body was found.

Maj Theerasak Boonsang of the Kathu police told The Phuket News that the man checked into the hotel on Tuesday (June 16) and was due to check out next Thursday (June 25).

“The room looked tidy, and we found no signs of foul play or assault,” Maj Theerasak said.

“We found prescription medicines in the room, and we believe the cause of death was related to a pre-existing medical condition of the victim.

“However, we are waiting for doctors at Patong hospital to confirm the cause of death.”

The Australian embassy has been notified of the incident.

I can say definitively it was a suicide if not from natural causes. I've prescription medications too, uh oh if I'm murdered I guess its natural causes. How can Denmark get a face from DNA but Thailand can't do basic forensics.

Yes, I hope the guy lived a life with a lot of fun, before he had to go.

Same goes for all members of my family and friends that I hope they've lived a great life with a lot of fun, once their time's up. Death is a part of life.....

What would you think if I wrote " I hope he never had fun in his life before?" Please rethink your post and understand that we'll also have to go one day.

And even if I'd have to go today, or tomorrow, I can say that I lived my life and had a lot of fun. Your post is definitely no fun at all to read.

People in other culture celebrate the death of a relative, or a close friend with a lot of fun, dancing and laughter, while "our cultures sometimes produce a lot of crocodile tears" and the fight about money starts.. Life's serious enough already.

The problem dying here is, if you die under suspicious circumstances, by western investigative standards, commonly termed, "foul play" - it can be / has been, officially recorded by police as natural causes or suicide, when in some cases, it clearly has not been. This can even happen when there is more than one death at the same time. Eg. the two sister who died on Phi Phi.

The police are either too lazy or incompetent, or both, to investigate properly, or, a foreigner being killed is damaging to Phuket's tourism industry.

Maybe this guy died of natual cause, then again, maybe he didn't.

WOW. Some people have really nothing better to do with their time then to speculate on something they know absolutley NOTHING about./

I am actually a releative of the deceased and I am absolutley disgusted at some of these misinformed comments! We havent even brought hom home yet and as you could imagine my family is gutted and to see absolute shit posted on here makes me sick to my stomch!

To clarify.........it was NOT suicide, it was NOT foul play......we lost a very special man, does it really matter how he died? The fact of the matter is he passed away on the trip of a lifetime and away from his family!
